5 Tips to Help You Beat the PokerStars Hyper-Turbo Multi-Table Satellites
This is a guest strategy post by www.bonuspokerreview.com
PokerStars has recently added hyper-turbo satellites to many of their big events. These tournaments can be very good value if you take advantage of their unique structure.
In these tournaments you start with 500 chips with the blinds starting at 25/50 and increasing every 3 minutes. These tournaments are a great value because PokerStars doesn’t charge a fee. They want more players to play in their big events so they cut the fees from these hyper-turbo satellites.
The best thing is you still don’t have to play in the tournament you won entry to, but can instead unregister and use the tournament dollars to play more hyper-turbo’s. Also, because these tournaments are meant to satellite into the bigger events a lot of the players will be multi-table tournament players who think the hyper-turbo’s are just lotteries and do not use the unique structure to their advantage.
Here are 5 tips that will help you use the structure of the hyper-turbo’s to your advantage:
1. All in or fold – Since you begin with only 10 times the big blinds and the blinds raise extremely quickly it will be very rare for you to have room to make plays so you should stick to just pushing your stack all-in or folding. The small blind would be the only place you would want to call from, but even then the big blind will often push over the top.
There is no reason to slow play in this structure either because the other players will also have short stacks in comparison to the blinds so a minimum raise to them would still look like an all-in. The only time slow playing may be a good play is if you have a monster hand in the small blind with no callers in front of you and you try to entice a push from the big blind.
2. Manage the blinds – The blinds go very frequently and by very large amounts. This means that what position you are in when the blinds raise could be the difference of whether you cash in the tournament.
Keep your eye on how much time is left before the blinds raise and try to time it so that you in the dealer position when the increase is made.
3. Play tight but not scared – Since such a large portion of the players in the tournament cash you should be playing a relatively tight style to start. You just want to make a couple strong plays with good hands and hopefully double up and hold on to the end.
Now since the blinds are so big you still have to move in when you have decent hole cards. Any mid to high pocket pair or big aces should be instant all-ins. You have to also be aware that because the blinds are so large many other players will be trying to steal them. This means that if you have a medium to good hand in the big blind and you aren’t close to cashing yet you will usually have good pot odds to make the call.
However, if you feel your current stack will carry you to the cash there is no need to risk your chips unless you have a monster hand.
There is no difference between the 1st and last satellite tickets, so do not risk losing your chips to another tall stack.
4. Slow it down – You should try to slow down your table as much as possible so that the other tables play more hands than you. The more hands the other tables play the more chances the players at them have to bust and the more blinds they will have to pay. A few extra hands could be the difference between cashing in these tournaments or not.
5. Avoid the bubble – Bubbling in these hyper-turbo satellites is the worst thing that can happen to you. If you have a big stack, do not risk any chips. Fold the majority of your hands, especially when another big stack has raised or is left to call. You do not want to be the player who goes from second in the tournament to the bubble boy.
On the other hand, if you have a short stack you should be aware of the other short stacks at the table and who the blinds gigantic blinds will be hitting first. If there is another player that is going to be forced all in soon, which would result in you cashing then you should probably just wait it out and hope that his hand doesn’t hold up.
Of course if you get a monster hand the smart move would be to push in regardless. If you are the next player to be forced all in you need to just look for any above average hands, push in and hope to come out with the best hand after the river.
You can find the PokerStars multi-table hyper-turbo satellites schedule about an hour before most of the bigger PokerStars events.
