I guess it depends on your personal financial situation. I found online poker 4-5 years ago and money was very tight. I started playing open freerolls and soon found forum freerolls. I spent about a year playing virtually nothing but freerolls during which time I learnt a hell of a lot about playing poker despite the so called donks.
I gradually built up small bankrolls in a few sites and moved on to forum buyins. I don't claim to be the greatest player in the world but I show a monthly profit which I think was helped by the practice in freerolls. Would I have reached this stage quicker if I had been in a position to deposit immediately...who knows. Personally I think I would have lost a lot of money during this learning period.
