You can do a lot to circumvent bad swings though, it is a matter of realizing what is going on with the cards and the table and players and adjusting your play style accordingly. The really isn't any reason to play bad, poker is a skill game, yeah we all have our bad beat stories, but were they really bad beats or maybe hands that if we had read the signs a little better maybe we should have gotten away from? I can tell you that personally I would say that 95%+ of any "bad beats" I have ever taken could actually probably more accurately be described as my not necessarily putting a good read on my opponent. There are only a couple of hands in poker that are unbeatable, the others are a matter of your interpretation of the situation.
