Pirates, I've learned from experience that you do not have to be the initial raiser to pull off a successful bluff. It is easier to bluff an opponent once you underestand their playing style. On occasion, the initial raiser is just trying to steal blinds and antes. This is a golden opportunity to reraise and take the pot down preflop. You could also smooth call and then take over the betting postflop. This is a strategy that also works at micro limits, but you have to have a solid image and ability to read your opponents.
