The problem with $1.00 tourneys is that you cant lose more than a dollar. thats why there are way to many people playing like you are here. The more the game is played like that (Calling big raises with j9 etc.) the more it is reduced to a slot machine luckbox of an event.
But assuming I am playing like you said for big value if it hits. I still have to pop the flush as soon as it hits. There are way to many things that can go wrong to check raise like you did. No way he folds anyway in these luckaments, but you took away his option by pricing him in with the check raise. Only way you can win this hand is to get him to fold before the turn.
I think you are totally on the wrong track in terms of style. In these type of tourneys you have to conserve chips so you can protect your premium hands. You will not win near as many $1.00 tournaments playing the loose style as you will playing tight and agressive post flop when you hit. you have to reduce the amount of flips cause you will never win them all.
