Sorry to say this but it could be your machine. On my old PC it did take up a huge amount of CPU usgage, but on my new PC which isn't top of the range but 10x better than my old one, and still pretty good - PKR runs with no problems along with several other programs.
Try playing with low detail graphics, that could help
