So, while I prefer cash [ROI for time invested]; i have found similar issues in tourneys. I seem to CONSISTENTLY take 3rd, 4th, and 5th [of 63+ people tourneys].
What seems to happen to me is right after [or going into] making the final table, I get card dead. Just plain dead K3off, 49off, J2off [back to back to back], etc.
The couple of times I've taken either 1st or 2nd, it seemed that prior to the "bubbles" [pay-out & final-table] I played a bit more aggressive at that stage. 6xbb w/ an A9off or if someone makes it 3xBB, depending upon position, going all-in pre-flop with KQsuited.
Now there's been times that's totally bitten me in the arse. KQsuited runs into KK for example, you 2x the other guy up & wham you're low-to-middle-stack.
So part of it seems to help as always to get cards at that stage. But for most of the tourney, I play extremely TAG. And that's my image at the table -- I don't complete the SB with marginal hands. Other players pick up on that... in fact it seems to bewilder quite a few -- I get comments like you're cards aren't worth another 100? when the blinds are 100/200. To which I'll lie [bout my actual hand] and say something like "TJ off is still junk in early position" etc.
And it helps in showdown to show quality hands.
Now all this may be moot if the field is >80 or so, as too many peeps are dropping and tables combining to keep track of all the other players [or them keep track of you].
But if you're at the table their bringing peeps to and your table image can be maintained, some well timed aggression helps getting over that hump.
good luck,
TroyC
