not exactly a book but i am a big fan of poker magazines. one of the upsides of a magazine over a book is that the columns you read have different perspectives from various players. 2 of the players that i like to read most are justin bonomo and eric "rizen" lynch, both of them write strategy columns every month in bluff magazine.

The problem I've found with poker books is that they can soon become outdated. As has been said, magazines may be better as they give you a fresher insight into the modern game.

I still think Doyle's Super System is the best book out there. Once I figured out to stop trying to be doyle and take what I learned from the book and apply it when the situation calls for it and not try it every hand trying to replace my game instead of altering certain areas it really helped me. Use books, mags ext. as suggestions not as a written law and learning what other player do in certain situations is vital to understanding the game and how different types of players react and respond to things can really boost your game. So I would say read a lot by a lot of different players, pros and newbies alike, including strategy sections in forums, to help to build an understanding of what is going on in other peoples heads and not going to far away from what already works for you.

I'm sure a good poker book couldn't hurt anyone to read but I've got to admit I've never read one. I do think experience counts though and I do have a little of that since I've been playing for a few years. Not all that great but do win once in a while. Good luck to you on finding that good book you want. Got some good recommendations in the posts.

A couple of titles you might be interested in -

Harrington On Hold'em for tournaments (2 volumes)

The Theory of Poker, and Hold'em For The Advanced Player by David Sklansky

A mistake made in the past is not as important as the lesson learned from it.

Doyles Super System is ok for new players that not read any book before, insteresting to know the story and for introduce in general to live poker and all his types (not only Holdem), but if you are already playing for some time it looks very old and outdated, still a good book to enjoy.

Sklanskys books are more for when you already have some time playing, are ok but i do not enjoy it much.

Harrington for Tourneys is very good book, take you step by step in a tourney, but like his name is only for tourneys and only for Holdem, i enjoy very much this one.

Little green book by Phil Gordon is one of the best books, enjoy it and read it back from time to time.

Tournament tactics by Roy Rounders, this is a fast read and not the best but is ok.

I want to read Phil Hellmuth´s book "Play Poker like the pros" and was interested that have not only Holdem but also Omaha, razz and Stud but only read bad reviews about this one and decide to not read it.

It would have been better if you had written for which level you want books for. Following books are
always a good read for player at any level.

“The theory of Poker” by Davis Sklansky
“Read'em and Reap” by Joe Navaro
    “Super-system“ by Doyle brunsun

    Hope this helps.

i agree, it is a great book. not too long, fits in your pocket. u can read just a page or two at a time because the chapters are super short.

everything from what to start to look for as a beginner wishing to improve, to mid- advanced concepts

i read this in e-book form, then bought it for my dad for his b-day - hoping to make him into less of a fish........jury's still out on hat experiment hohoho
