Default Would you have done things differently (tournament)

So I’m playing a tourney last night which is pretty rare for me. Due to a bad connection (which has been going on for at least 3 years) I find it difficult and frustrating to try and be a serious contender, but sometimes I just feel the urge so I‘ll play a few cheap ones now and then.

Last night I find myself in a strange situation, the final table. Three big stacks to my right and little me and another player clinging on for dear life with our itty bitty stacks. It’s pretty obvious we were playing survivor but I knew I had him by 3k. I knew that sooner or later he’d have to push but he didn’t. He just sat there and blinded out, leaving me crippled.

5th paid $68, 4th was $99, 3rd was $132. I wanted to play and laid down some good hands knowing that if I lost one hand he had me and 4th place. Do you think I was right to just lay down and take 4th? 30 bucks seems like a decent sized chunk of change on a $3 investment.

Just curious, how would you play that situation?
And I know scared money doesn’t win.

    wellllll....

    hard to say...

    but

i'd either have picked my moment and gone all in...

    or...

wait til he, on your left, and you or he and the furthest up right were both blinds, then raise the hell out of em or go all in with a reasonable hand, prob better option and push em to betting with inferior hands....or, hopefully, folding, giving u some breathing space...

all in all, u can't just sit there and "let it bleed", might as well watch tv...or both, lool

ps, if you are a poker player who has had a bad connection for 3 years, isn't it time to get it fixed?

best of luck...i'm rootin for ya...

as for shorstack depends how short u are talking provided u have some fold equity at late stages a double up usually gives u a stack which can wina tourney.

Personally i believe u play for first mayb slow down a little at the point of the bubble but as for folding because another player is let him do it....he cant finish higher than 1 extra place up without alot of luck.....if u double up u are capable of 1st and a much bigger return

Sounds sweet, all I need is the house in the big city so I can get it. I live in Hicksville, we get what we're given, like it or lump it.

The opportunity was there and I passed up on some good opportunities. Blinds were up to 6k/12k and we had enough to go around 3 times. If I had called one flop and folded I would have been the shortstack so I would have considered myself pot committed.
The odds (I thought) were against me as 3rd place had 4x the amount of chips I had. So do I play poker or just sit there guaranteeing myself 4th place and an extra $30.
I was hoping the shortstack would push before my chips ran out as he knew he was sitting in 5th. Why he didn't was a mystery to me as it was obvious that I was just going to keep folding till he blinded out as he did.

The three deep stacks were laggy, they could afford to be. Had I called even with the small blind posted then I would of been the shortstack on the table. Had I pushed all in then he would of folded for sure and I would of been going up against a deep stacked loose aggressive player, not a very favorable situation (my opinion)

In my great wisdom i would have gone balls to the walls in this scenario because at this ponit your way behind so you have to make up lots of ground and folding aint gonna get er done, and even if you loose you will still get the $68 and thats not so bad for $3 investment

First decent cards allin. You settled for 4th right at the start so 4th is what you got. I've seen players come back from 4 or 5 BB and win. If you don't try you will never take 1st.

I wish I had problems like this, go for 1st or 4th in an MTT. My problems usually hit about 10 places before getting my buy in back. I decide that KK or AA is good to play to try to really advance up the leader board and I end up placing 8th places out of the buy in money and then Im just staring at the screen and wondering what could of been.

Everybody plays differently. I would of push after seeing he was just waiting for a good hand. My guess is you might of had a chance to pick up some of his blinds. The other side to this is usually the big stack would of folded if you push once in a while

i play to win the game. you 'settled' for $30 when you could have played aggressively and tried to win a lot more.

I probably should of mentioned it was Omaha. If the big stack min raised or just called for that matter there's no way he's going to lay down to my all-in. I consider Omaha more of a coin flip.
I've NEVER read any strategy books, I just play small stakes ring tables for fun, 1 hand at a time.
I guess I just didn't want to hand the other guy an extra $30 when he refused to play. I did raise him all in one time when the big stacks left it to the 2 of us and he didn't bite.
I've seen players using the "I refuse to play" strategy to limp into the money on SnG's alot. I see players using this strategy as well as the "I've got a full time bank and I'm gonna use it" strategy to limp into the money on a tournament. I just have NO experience on a final table in a tourney and wasn't aware that players adopt the "refuse to play and I hope you go broke before I do" on the final tables.
I appreciate the responses and I feel I was wrong in the way I played but at least I beat the other shortstack.
