for me, i like to think it's about 75% skill, 25% luck.

there was a famous gambling court case in the 50's i think. a poker club was trying to prove that poker was a game of skill to get out of having to pay a gambling license fine.

the forward thinking jury decided that the only way they could find out was if they learnt and played the game for a couple of days which is what they did. when they came to the verdict - the vote was 10 - 2 that poker was a game of chance and the club was forced to pay.

when talking to reporters after the case it turned out that the 2 that voted against the decision had won almost all of the games that they had played and the 10 had considered them just lucky ...........says it all really !!!
.........just because it is, doesn't make it so !!!

Matt Damon says it well in Rounders 'If Poker is a game of luck then why do the same five guys make the final table of the WSOP every year'.

Well it may not be the case anymore, but there is a reason why you always see the same group of players cashing, or playing at final tables.

But if it wasnt for luck then people wouldn't play in big tournements unless they were the best players. Why would you want to play a game against the World's Best without knowing that Lady Luck could be shining on you.

harry is right (surprise surprise, lol, good to see you back around Harry) luck does play a part but skill plays a bigger part.

I still wonder... everybody is allways talking about making money with poker, but actually there is lost just as much as won... or am I wrong? Every penny you earn comes from someone who lost it... so making money out of poker seems hard to me.

Yes. You can be either the guy who's winning, or the guy that loses, but in the end we will lose as much as we win I think.
