for those who do not deposit ever freerolls are great (such as myself)
for those that can win and get past the donks and be left to play top table its a cool experience for them especially the first timers..and also it may lead them towards mtts if they choose to take that path
so in my opinion they very helpful to those starting out but not to sure about the game even though they will face many donks... i guess it will make they game tighter maybe who knows but gl on the tables

Whilst I agree that we would all like to be playing $5/$10 nl ring games with their potential rewards, very few players are in the position to risk the sort of money needed to play these games. I disagree with the lotto concept. For a beginner with little or no funds freerolls are great. Sure they take time and effort, it all depends on your goal whether the effort is worthwhile.
All I would advise is to persevere at a site until you win, even if its only $5, then invest this in the many money added events offerred by various forums. The $1 buyin with $50 added by this forum are some of the best value games available to a low funded player.
I have never deposited at any site but I now have funds in approx. 50 sites and pick and choose which games to play. I still am forced to normally stick to a max. $5 buyin but hey it's a step up from freerolls. Good luck to those willing to make the effort, and yes you will learn a lot on your way up.

I play freerolls but only when Im playing other tournaments online, to me it can be a waste of time, you have to sit there for a couple hours and the most you can ever really win is maybe 20 bucks, and thats if you come in first. you have to beat out over 2000+ players for a couple of bucks, so its like whats the point really? I will play them if I am already online playing games, but i cannot understand why people would go online just to play just them

another problem with free rolls is that they require an enourmous amount of luck to win. you can catch some big hands and get chipped up, but at just about every table you play at there is always and i do mean always at least one person at your table that goes all in every hand. So when you pick up pocket rockets and call, he turns over queen four and hits two pair, it always happens. To sit there for a few hours to win a couple bucks really isnt worth it. people have won a couple bucks in those and turned those couple bucks into some decent winnings, but do you really want to sit there for three hours and someone calls with a bad hand and busts you and you win nothing at all?

As someone who gas gambled away more money than I care to think about and has not been aware of let alone been playing poker for very long, I can tell you that the freerolls saved my life and marriage! So I think they are worth it. 18 months time and I am retired and then I will have a real go at the tables!! You know down here in Australia poker has only just really taken off in my area the big przes in live games are quite pathetic but it is worth the practice to find your strengths and weaknesses. And Bob I actually do agree with you that the hourly rate return sucks but for some of us who through their own stupidity stuff everything up in their life PATIENCE is the key! But I'll get there!!!!!!

The point is Aace that not everyone can afford to put their money on the line! And personally having been put out of work 3 days before christmas in '07 and having seen the people living on the street trying to feed themselves in a time when there could be no hunger if those in power actually gave a damn; then does it really matter?
