I think this is solid advice from the start,
and some things for new players to keep in mind:
There is no one "Best" strategy.
You need to be thinking when you are playing.
-what cards are you holding (odds),
-what cards are your opponents holding (do you hold the best hand or could you hold the best hand with an out)
-what cards do your opponents think you have (are you able to bluff, or slow play, and what way of playing will profit you best in this situation over the long run)
These are just general concepts,
I think before you read a players' strategy guide, do some playing, keep stats of your hands, and pay attention to the game. Try to develop your own playing style, and keep your opponents guessing. keep in mind, if i know you're playing a certain style, you will be predictable, and I will be able to counter you. Once you have a feel for the game (whether you're winning or losing) take suggestions from other players, and test them out (don't take them for granted) use other players' intuitions to help improve your game
