Play tight and be selective with starting hands. Don't get too commited with big hands after the flop if you that you're in trouble. Also, maximize your hands to get the maximum amount of chips chips, even if it's a small amount. Rather win small than lose big, not that winning big is a problem.

I agree w/kingjames about using play chips! Try the Poker Stars freerolls,they are big tourney's but if you can make it through that field you know you have the patience need for this game.

Yes I agree, but you can only play so many play money games before you go crazy with all the donks and the fact that win you win you don't really win anything... well I guess experience
My advice would be to read a poker book and learn some ideas and concepts and then play in freerolls or play money ring games and use those techniques and apply them to your game to find out your style of play

My advice to new players is always to begin by learning to play tight aggressive ABC poker. This approach will help you stay in tournaments longer, which means you'll get to see more hands, which gives you more opportunity to practice figuring out how other people play, which is what you have to learn in order to improve your ability to put other players on hand ranges.
For example, if you've seen that a given player tends to limp small pairs from late position but not early, you can assume he doesn't have a small pair if he limps or bets out from early, or if he bets out from late.
The key thing is to watch all the hands and to look for patterns in their play. If you simply forget each hand once it's finished, it's difficult to establish players' tendencies that will help you gauge their ranges more accurately when you play hands against them.
I don't necessarily agree on a new player playing strictly freerolls, there are entirely too many people that are willing to and do go "All-In on anything" in these. They can be very valuable in hand evaluation and learning the pot odds, but my suggestion would be find a live casino with a decent poker room and start looking at getting into like a $1/3 NL Hold'em game. Play tight and learn. You don't get better until you realize that there can be a real penalty for losing. It shouldn't be enough to kill you financially, but it is enough to make you pay attention and learn to read players and figure out different betting practices and styles.
