Try to develop your own style of poker,.. the one that works for you. Generally speaking, Tight/Aggressive (TAG) is by far the most winning style of poker. If you were to check out some of the big buy-in tourneys on Fulltilt, you will discover that 90% of the players there are playing TAG.
A great way to get a good introduction to this is by picking up a couple of poker books. My suggestion to you is to get them from your local library and request an inter-library book loan. You might only be able to keep the book out for a couple of weeks but I'm pretty sure you won't be able to put it down if you're really keen.
Some books are extremely math-oriented, others are way too outdated, some are very general, and alot cover to broad an area. If you're interested in No Limit Holdem (I'm assuming you are, lol), then try picking up Phil Gordon's Little Green Book. It is well written and a great introduction to the game. I wouldn't say it's just suited for begginers as I'm positive that many intermediate players would benefit from it as well (and even alot who think they're advanced, lol).
Next on the list of 'books to get'.. Harrington on Holdem Vol. 1 - 'Tournament Play'. Harrington also has a new series out now on CashGames. Pick up the original one for now instead, and start with Vol.1... it'll keep ya busy for awhile.
If you can get a half decent grip on either or both of these books, I can almost guarantee you that you will become a winning player (for sure you'll be way ahead of most of the players in the micro stakes,.. without a doubt!)
GL!
If you're ever looking for some advice, you could send me some hand histories and I'd be happy to go thru them and let you know how or if I'd play it any differently.
