I'm not new to poker, I've been playing for about 5 years now but I do not understand what "on tilt" means. I thought it meant when somebody goes all in because they are angry that they were just sucked out of a bum load of chips. But what does it really mean? Anybody care to fill me in?
On tilt is when someone gets pissed for whatever reason... bad beat or lost a big hand or bad play whatever the reason the person plays poorly because of it. They play hands they wouldn't usually play and make moves they wouldn't usually make. This usually ends bad for the tilter and good for the rest of the table. Good Luck!
I tend to go on tilt when some lucky moron is calling every hand and hitting every flop. Deep down I know I am a better player and their luck will run out, so I find myself buying more chips at the table to win back what they lucked off of me. They win a few more times and then leave so I am stuck down a bit and now the player that I was so sure that I could beat is gone. I have to really watch myself and let the small loss happen without buying back in to the table.
is basically when a player looses their composure / their control of themselves / makes bad decisions that they wouldnt normally make
generally a player goes on tilt after something has happened that they didnt expect / considers unfair or from taking to heart something said in the chatbox or acting wrongly as a result of someone elses actions
then wishing they hadnt done what they did ... and crucuially NOT being able to forget about it and move on
true tilting meltdown players are Mike the mouth and Phil Helmuth ... good players but very easy to get themselves completely wound up over a hand that doesnt work out as expected or as the poker odds suggest they should ... then as a result of going on tilt they make more and more bad decisions because they cannot get a hand or situation out of their mind.
Avoiding Tilt is one of the most important things every player must master ...
being able to see a mistake, dust yourself down and not let it get to you
being able to ignore bullying, bragging and general influence of other players chat
If you briefly find yourself tilting and CANNOT control yourself and get back to making good decisions ... leave the table immediately ... you will not win more you will make things worse and loose more
If you spot a player who is easily tilted or can be tilted then it IS within the rules of the game (so long as its polite and not offensive chat) to try and tilt a player more ... that is part of the game
ie. you get lucky - you can either act the lucky fool or wind the player up with bizarre logic and iffy rational for your move and appear to believe that your play was not luck but some kind of incredible skill
If you spot a player that someone else has made tilty then you can and should factor this in - bear in mind they will probably be making more bad decisions and hand selection will almost certainly have got poorer
Also bear in mind a good player can and will use chat after a badbeat to ajust their table image ... ie. they could give the impression of going into meltdown purely to get maximum value from strong hands they may get, or feel this is a good time to change gears briefly ... They are very dangerous players as they give the appearance or add chat to suggest they have lost it when in fact they are turning a setback into a very big advantage.

very, very, very, very good posting.
i've done this myself ... that's why it is so much harder online to get reads on people. you can't fake tilt in person as well.
