Freerolls are not a complete waste of time. The first hour is typically very loose since people are trying to accumulate chips and take greater risks with the low blinds. Still, it takes skill to ultimately win a freeroll. On yesterday, I played a $25 freeroll with 826 and won the tournament. True, I had the chip lead at my tables the majority of the time and the overall chip lead with 60 or so left before nearly imploding at the final table. There, I was 5 out of 6 after tough beats and a loose call or two and was able to get heads up after cracking aces with a river flush. Then, I overcame a 3-1 chip deficit and hit a set against top pair on the final hand, winning $5.88. So, with tight, solid play and a few breaks and bluffs, you can be sucessful in freerolls.

I BEGAN TO APPRECIATE THE FREE ROLLS BECAUSE I COULD ACCUMULATE ENOUGH CASH IN MY ACCOUNT THAT i COULD PLAY THE CASH GAMES AT THE SITE. WITHOUT AN INVESTMENT OF MY OWN CASH, FELT THE MEAGER PAYOUTS ACCUMULATD OVER TIME COULD BE A BIGGER PAY-OFF FOR THE TIME SPENT. ANYTIME A PERSON STARTS A NEW INVESTMENT, THEY MUST SPEND A LOT OF TIME WITHOUT A LOT OF RETURN. WHO KNOWS, A FEW SMALL WINS AND PLACES MAY END UP BEING $$$ A MUCH BIGGER RETURN. bUY IN SMALL, AND HOPE FOR A BIGGER RETURN IN THE DAYS AHEAD. PERCEPTION IS THE KEY HERE.
I have cashed in plenty of freerolls and personally I have found that if you let the weak pick each other off and exercise patience you stand a good chance of making some bucks.
I enjoy the freerolls. In some ways I find them more of a challenge than buy ins. I've been having a very good last month or two. Won more than a few tourneys. Of all of my wins I am most proud of my win in a fulltilt $100 Razz freeroll with 2700 players. Easily the hardest win I have had. Grueling. And a lot of fun. And I learned a lot about Razz, tournament strategy and reading other players. Anyone who thinks you can't learn something from playing freerolls is someone I look forward to playing against. Any game is a learning opportunity and freerolls provide an opportunity to learn a lot because all kinds of players show up at them.
I won 8th in a freeroll about a week ago or so LOL.... I know it was about 3 hrs give or take and I won 2.50 LOL!! WoW In the money huh. The only thing that I do get out of the freerolls is more play to build my skill, and maybe win some money once in awhile LOL. I call the freerolls a donkey fest, so if I place it makes me feel good that I survived LOL!! I think if it was a 5 hour event I wouldn't enjoy that either though LOL, 3 was enough for me.
lol not a total waste of time, but the winnings are pretty meager. I quit playing the fulltilt freerolls after my AA got beat 12 or 13 times in a row. i would just move all in preflop no matter what just to see what would happen, no matter what called me it won.

I seriously doubt that

I certainly don't think beginning players should discount these large field freerolls as there is much to be gained as the previous poster said. I've played many of them myself. This is what I got from them:
Practice: against varying types of player, at varying stages of a tournament
Money: you'll get some funds to start a bankroll.
Sense of achievement: beating over 1000+ players certainly boosts the confidence.
Stamina: you'll need this if you're going be any way successful.
When you've touched all 4 of these though I think you certainly need to consider moving on unless your game is purely recreational.
Cashing is not the complete point of playing freerolls, though it is good to take advantage of. The ultimate goal in mind is to win the tournament. You also want to be patient and play your best game. The bad beats are going to come with the number of hands played and loose players entered into the freerolls. You also have to avoid the bad play or two that cripples your stack and sends you home without cashing also.
