Talking Bridal Showers, Birthdays and Bears!

I'm having some crazy times lately. Some of you know that my daughter is getting married in a couple of weeks and I'm becoming a nut case. Our family is filled with birthdays in August, so I've also been running around to birthday parties all over the place. So, it's been bridal showers, birthdays and now, Bears!!

I've lived in this same house for the last 24 years and have never, ever seen a bear around here. Last month we were watching tv one evening and my hubby said, "OMG There's a F***ing Bear in the front yard!" I said, "Ok hun." But, looked anyway and there it was! Craziness! Then we hear that there are 2 mother bears, 4 cubs and several large male bears being spotted all around the county.

So, today my hubby was mowing the paths and trails we have out in the woods and I hear the mower stop and him yelling "OMG There's a huge F***ing bear out here!" This time I believed him. Being stupid/crazy, we decided we were going to go looking for him in the woods, but we couldn't find him, probably a good thing..lol

So, for the wedding reception (in our yard) we have about 5 campers and 12 tents coming to camp for the week! Anyone know of any type of cheap bear repellent?

Yeah, I was hiking once alone in an Arkansas national park. They had recently seeded the area with black bears. I came around a huge boulder and there he was, his back turned to me about 50 yds off. lol, I remember thinking, "It's a F***ing Bear"

Funny how we all say that. Also funny that the Nature Channel programs about Bears only call the Bears.... Bears, rofl

Bear repellant? hmmm, nope. Do know Bear attractors. Put about 3 gallons of Peanut Butter and some chocolate out 5 miles up wind away from your house, they love that stuff. Hunters use it.

Villa, you are too funny! Thanks for your story. I luv that you can make me laugh out loud...

Have any ideas to keep the Blue Heron's from eating all my goldfish in my pond? I have to do something soon, the hubby is threatening to get out his deer gun and take some practice shots..lol..just kidding, he wouldn't shoot a Blue Heron. They are beautiful, but not with my goldfish hanging out of their mouths.

Congrats on your daughters upcoming marriage. I am sure it will be a wonderful weekend.

I am from northern maine originally so I have seen a couple of bears. I even saw one hiking in Maryland once. They are scary as hell! We had a good dog growing up that would keep animals out of yard but besides that just an electric fence will work.

Hope the event goes off with out a hitch and bear free!

sure momma, anything to help. I would set up a motion detector on the goldfish pond, that shouts "hey...if you are a blue heron, please leave" anytime it detects movement, and it would be fun for giggles for the guests you have that stray there also.

Now, if you wanna go low tech and kitschy, put some plastic pink flamingos in the pond. Blue Herons are solitary hunters and don't like competition. Of course then you run into the problem of guests laughing at you, instead of with you, lol

    Thumbs up Great Idea!

I want some Pink Flamingos! That would be just our style. Gotta go find some before the wedding reception. It would be such a great conversation piece in my pond.

I managed to get a picture of the goldfish stealer. He is beautiful, but he needs to lose his taste for my fish real quick!

Thanks for the good wishes on the wedding, wicked. Yeah, the bears are new to our area. We went camping in Allegheny State park for years (about 3 hours away from our house) and would go spotlighting at night in hopes of seeing a bear. About 7 or 8 years ago, the bear population started to explode up there and now they are starting to branch out all over Western New York. They have even been captured/some were shot .. right in the cities of Buffalo and Amherst! I feel sorry for them. They are just plain running out of room and getting punished for trying to find food.

The bear they recently killed wasn't even in someone's yard or threatening anyone. He was in a small wooded area between houses when the police saw him and rather that "waiting for it to turn on someone" they just shot it dead! In my opinion, they could have at least just tranquilized it and tried to re-release it, but idk... maybe there is no where to re-release it.

So, I just have to learn to be more cautious on my walks I guess. We can live together as long as they don't threaten us I guess.

    Lightbulb I know!

How about if we shoot the bear, stuff it and put him by the pond to scare away the Blue Heron!?
