FarmVille
Ok, Facebook has this Zynga game called FarmVille. I have seen a bunch of poker players there. Zynga also has other games like Fishville and MafiasWar.
The graphics are cute but crude, and the flash player is slow.
Zynga makes about 600 million dollars a year with these games.
Farmville is social game that depends neither on gameplay or aesthetics.You can grow tomatoes all u want, but you need friends to come fertilize them, friends to send you a cow or chicken. Friends to share their bounty crop with a bonus. and when you get friends, or neighbors, well running your farm gets easier. you get points, or can buy them (lol) for stuff like tractors that plow more land. you can buy a nicer house. You can have a barn raising and ask people to come help, they send you a nail, or brick, or plank of wood. They help you, you help them. It's an obligation to return courtesies, a loop of reciprocity if u will.
I guess it's something to do if you are bored, And yes I do have a farm there ( and NO, I do not need more neighbors there). But really the whole thing is quite silly.
Lets go down the rabbit hole of FarmVille with an example. You can have chickens there. chickens lay eggs. They lay an egg a day. Once they have laid the egg, you can go collect it. that gives you "cash" points. You could buy more chickens (and I'm sure many do as they do make 600 million a year), but it is easier to have friends gift you a chicken. So say you end up with a flock of 20 chickens. Well u can buy a chicken coop (with witch u can store the 20 chickens in the coop and collect the eggs all at once) with real money, or slowly build up enough fake cash money to buy a coop. It gets crazier, friends/neighbors come to your farm and they feed your chickens. sometimes after they do that, your chickens lay a "Mystery White, Brown or gasp, Golden Egg". This gets posted to the Facebook friends list, and if you or anyone on the friend list hurry, they can "Hatch an Egg" for a bonus house, pig, cow, silo, or whatever farm thing.
Lotsa peeps do it, and lol, lots of poker players if they facebook.
So back to the chickens. the standard coop holds 20 chickens. The "Super Chicken Coop" holds 60 chickens. You can get this by accumulating enough "FV" points (believe me you gotta farm ur ass off to get those) or hello paypal, or get like 50 neighbors/friends to get involved in the whole crazy scheme of visiting and gifting and fertilizing and hatching eggs.
The thing is, you can have either a regular chicken coop that holds 20 chickens or the "Super Coop" that holds 60. cant have both, and you cant get more than 1 of either. ROFLMAO. You can have up to 5 Dairy Barns filled with Cows (god another weird thing), but only one chicken coop.
Well, a bunch of FarmVille players have branched off and formed a group whose sole purpose is to petition Zynga that more than 1 chicken coop is needed. lol 46,159 members so far.
People begging for another virtual chicken coop, lol. My favorite post on that page is: "i have 100 chickens and only 1 coop that holds 60, the poor chicken r left out in the cold on rainy and cold days. Not to mention every night with no protects from preditors. Please let have atleast 1 more for the chickens sake."
AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH, It's crazy. ok later folks, I am going to FarmVille now to plant some Squash, and check on my chickens, lol.
