Need members advice

I have an issue that has come up at the Weestro family castle and was thinking my 4Kings friends could maybe hook me up with some clear outsider advice. What happened is this, last weekend my wife got a phone call from some person claiming to be a rep of a legal dept of some company and he proceeded to tell us that 1 1/2 years ago my wife wrote a check for $300 and never honored it and if we didn't pay it there would be actions taken. She asked him for the info on the company because we had done a BK last year so there should not have been any outstanding issues from that time period so we told the rep that anything we may have had was written off, he then had his supervisor call and tell my wife if she didn't pay the money right then she would lose her ssi ( she is disabled ) she would be fined in addition to the $300 and recieve jail time, so naturally she got scared and i told her to call him back and ask him to proove the debt to us and we will pay it asap, the guy starts yelling that we are responsible and that this debt is not covered by BK, but he can't give a us a name of the company we supposedly owe and he can't give us an address or any kind of proof, just that after its paid we would get a receipt and then we would know. The strangest thing of all was a few hours after my wife had spoken to the "supervisor" we got a call from some credit repair company saying that they heard we needed credit repair help and that they would help us out ?WTF ? I told my wife that unless they show us proof of the debt and that it wasn't discharged then we are not paying shit because it sounds to much like a scam to me but she is very worried, so i wanted you guys as outsiders with no emotional involvement to give your opinions, because when your the one involved it doesn't seem so black and white ?

It definately sounds like a scam. There should be no reason the guy cant tell u what company its for and for him to start screaming means he was getting mad cuz u guys werent falling for it. Unless he can provide u some proof i wouldnt pay any attention to it.

IM a little to F'd up to read all this but one sentence told me this was all fucking bullshit, There is no way your SSI can be touched unless its the actual govt you owe or you won a big poker game (which is one of my problems now, unless I win enough to be set for life, winning a big game will only cause me problems I dont need) , regardless of what you claimed they cant come back now

ON A SIDE NOTE TO ANYONE READING, DO NOT SHORT SELL YOUR HOUSE AS A BUSINESS DECISION WITHOUT A LAWYER, BANKS are selling these short sells to collection agencies and I can tell you if you did one without a lawyer, there is one line that will fuck you in all this, PAY The 3,000 and have a lawyer get you out right

Next time, if they call again
suggest you will be seeking the sum of $1million for emotional distress over the threat they have said about sending your disabled wife to jail.

Well my first thought, as a retired banker, is that a check that old is no longer any good, anyway. If you owe them money, I'm sure they would be happy to send a bill. I don't know much about SSI, but I don't think they can touch it, even if this were legit.
Seems like they have too much information on you and your wife. You might want to do one of those free credit checks to make sure no one is trying to steal your identity. Other than that, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just be sure not to give them ANY information.

This is a common scam lately. If the people sounded middle eastern especially. They usually prey on those trying to get payday loans and get their info off phoney internet application for them. I stupidly filled one out and now they have my SS# and bank acc't #. If you search payday loan scams you'll find a whole forum on it. I was told that a warrant for my arrest would be issued the next day and was read an affadavit. She told me it read: 1. I took out a payday loan from cash advance in CA using internet and I never bothered to pay it back.

That is an exact quote, I'm not a lawyer but "never bothered to pay it back" just doesnt sound like legal terminology. Plus, Law firms donot issue warrants for arrest, the DA does. They also don't do it over the phone, you would get certified documentation. Until then, I'd say don't worry about it. If you didn't honor a check, you'd get a certified letter from Justice of peace letting you know you needed to pay or get arrested. A law firm doesnt have that athority. All sounds like a similar scam to me.

I'm the hang-up King, I would never listened long enough to find out that much info.
I don't even get past an introduction before I hang up.

If someone starting yelling at me, it's for sure they would not be get anything from me.
If they called back, I'd start yelling.....
If it's legit. They should be a little more polite.

Thank you so much friends , i appreciate the fast replys and i am glad i didn't let her panic and influence me. Now the craziest thing is what Madjek wrote because this is 1000% that scenario, as my wife filled out a couple of those payday loans one day and then these dicks started calling a few weeks later, the first rep was middle eastern or Indian but the supposed mngr was English speaking with no accents and one of the things that had me a bit worried was they new her name and account # and her social, so they must have gotten from one of those applications, i wish she had never done that but we have closed that account now and believe me nobody wants my identity as are credit couldn't buy you a 25 cent gumball
