I've been watching this season's Survivor every week. Over the past few seasons, the contestants have really been stepping it up in the mind-game department. If you have watched Survivor every season, you may remember Johnny Fairplay, the contestant who manipulated everyone into feeling sorry for him by claiming that his grandma had died! That, for me, was when Survivor started to change a bit. While contestants still have to survive on not much more than beans and rice, the real game these days, is who can pull off the biggest upset through lies and manipulation. I hate lies and manipulation in general, but for this game, it is crazy when people are totally blown away at the tribal council.
This season, the guy I love to hate is "Coach." At a poker table, I imagine I would have at least one note on him that would warn me about his "Big Ego." Right now in his Survivor game, his ego rears it's head every episode and it's getting even bigger! Now he is calling himself, "Dragon Slayer." He thinks every plan is his plan and everyone totally agrees with him. I'm sure I would have been out of the show on the first day if I had to be on a team with him. After all, can't have someone with a bigger ego than mine hanging around..huh?...lol. Not really. It has been my experience that big ego's can get you into trouble as we've all seen at the tables..lol.
So, last week I was pretty PO'ed when the tribe voted Brendan out rather than the Coach. Somehow he actually "DID" pull off an upset at the tribal council. My hubby and I actually yelled at the tv when the final vote came in!
So, who knows? Maybe you need a big ego in the game of Survivor if you are gonna survive till the end. Or maybe, like in poker, a big ego (and some luck) can tip the scales in your favor for a bit. But maybe, like in poker, the quiet, skillful players will gang up on "Mr. Ego" and strip his stack and hopefully his ego, down to the table.
