Yes I do that also. I will pause the music, and just listen for a few minutes here and there. When people think you can't hear them, they will talk about you sometimes. People have talked trash a few times when they thought I couldn't hear them.
But, I don't really care what they say. I try to play with no emotions. Therefore, I listen to music most of the time. Peace.
I always listen to music while playing online, just a habit. It has been a while since I played live so I'm not sure if I would do it. I liked all the chit chat if it was not too obnoxious.![]()

I listen to music on an Ipod or my phone about 25 percent of the time I play (session-wise).
When I have it in, I will hit pause or turn it down if I am involved in a hand. There's one guy I play with who does not pay a bit of attention the game, other than to look at his cards. He is playing a game or something on his phone furiously. Almost turns his back to the table when he's not involved in a hand. And if he plays 1 hand an hour, that's a lot. Seriously, if he is involved, I probably fold 95 percent of the time.
I also like to chat with the dealers and other players, so that limits my music need.
I have a running set of music that I listen to when I'm at the table. It keeps me from getting bored and zoning out. I second the previous comment about turning it down enough (or all the way) to hear the conversation going on around me when people think I'm not paying attention.
It also depends on the game. When I'm playing league poker I tend to keep it on and turned up to tune out the obnoxious players and the loud music in the bar. If I know it's going to be an especially long tournament, I go back and forth between listening and not.
I think so long as the player keeps in touch with the table action and doesn't cause any problems, headphones are fine. I find it more annoying and disrespectful when there are players who are constantly IM'ing, texting and playing games on their phone.
I think its ok, mainly people don't say much about there stratgey so just read body/facial expressions will be good
