OK IM playing live last night with some dudes I highly respect, Weds league night is at a venuw with some really good Card room players so I try to soak up what they say as a sponge

OK you know when you get a insult disquised as a compliment but really its a major insult

We have this dude plays at the track and has won 2 of the biggesr torunies and made a ton of final table (WHICH IS ITM THE MONEY and not a win right )

I see the dude int he parking lot earlier yesterday after noon still riding high on my Live MTT ITM a game in which him and I told I have crossed a bridge by hitting ITM and now I gotta learn how to win

THAT NIGHT we are playing league poker (and this dude only comes ont his night) and Im always picking his brain. Out of the blue he goes

"I was thinking about what you told me about being ITM and starting thinking, I have never been ITM, either I win it or I bust out but never in the money" I said Id of prefered to win but I crossed a bridge I feel but regardless after that statement I was thinking damn dude that was a major dickhead statement

ONE GREAT THING TO COME OUT OF LAST NIGHT, I WAS VINDICATED another player (who i didnt know was railing me at the track) Comes up and ask how the game was. I thought he was talking about the Sunday league game where i busted very quick and thought he was joking and said yea it was a fun 20 minutes and he said it was more than 20 minutes I said wait what are you talking about. He goes the track on saturday. I WAS LIKE HELL YES THAT WAS AWESOME. (and more like 5 hours) SO THAT MADE ME VERY HAPPY and the dude said my play was very solid

I dont know if Im being thin skinned but I felt the other comment was a slap in the face this dude has final tabled before and not won and that would be ITM but I bit my tongue (ME IMAGINE THAT) cause the players I want to learn from I dont want to turn on me but comments like that (WELL ANYWAYS) thats a GIANT - out something very +

The verdict is something yall have been telling me from the beginning, I know how to play my cards now I gotta know how to play the players is the advice I am getting

Its like me saying to you SB about your big tounry win. Yea good win SB for a tourny like that (see its like a positive thats really a negative)

Default listen to advice but always play your own game

    hi Dan

wow alot of points to cover but hopefully can help a bit on some maybe ...

yes it probably was a dig - a dumbassed one IMHO but dont let it get to you

poker advice is NOT consistent and nobody has ALL the best advice ... maybe alot of players have a bit of useful advice

its up to you to listen to advice and pick up what works for you or is worth taking onboard

IMHO the often pedalled "go for the win or go out" mantra is bullsh*t ... now alot of players including professionals will totally disagree with me so I guess I should clarify

sometimes you should push for the win and be brave - other times you can just see that you are likely to scrape into the money but unlikely to win ...

or more specifically you are unlikely to increase your chances of winning significantly by changing the way you would play to ALSO be fairly certain of finishing in the money

IMHO it is like the "pot committed" thing where players donk off their last chips because despite common sense, logic and clearly about to loose they put in the rest of their chips following a mistake with a bigger final fatal mistake ... that as I've said before is NOT being pot committed it is being "pot stupid"

the win or place arguement is exactly the same ... If you think about what your friend said "either lose or win" essentially what he is saying is he gambles far more to either go up the ladder alot or bust out ...

that is gambling NOT playing poker ...

using that logic he should be trying to double up and get all-in alot more to either go home really early or have loads of chips early ... taking the logic that far makes it obvious that its a bit of an overly generalising plan

he is relying alot more on luck with a sh*t or bust approach than skill which invariably comes down to patience, cunning, patience and being prepared to play the long game

dont get me wrong when "pros" advise at some points in a tournament you need to grow some and take some chances and aim for the win - thats true

but IMHO there is zero +ev in going kamakazi for a win and busting out when the proper approach at the rights times are likely to get you in the money or near the money to then go for the win

you will be showing alot more consistent form AND IMHO chances of winning a tournament(s) if you consistently can place than if you finally win a tournament following a sh*t or bust approach

as for why the guy said it - probably to make himself feel better and probably to make him feel like he was still imparting is "Knowledge" ... probably more for his own sense of importance than to help you

dont let it get to you

you will have to have a really thick skin at the tables - nitty players are the absolute worst on a table for moaning and complaining about your luck / their skills etc etc etc etc blah blah blah

just play your own game and let your own results speak for themselves

you will meet alot of players from degen gamblers with no clue to savvy seen it all players and everything in between -

enjoy playing the game and enjoy winning

the more results you have the more the doubters etc will have to keep quiet

on my tournament record I totally agree with you the ASOP win is in the overall scheme of things not a big tournament, not a big achievement and probably not against the toughest of opposition

(poker affiliates are notoriously either total degens, have zero interest in poker and only the money or are so convinced by their own nitty brilliance that they over play every hand)

for me personally the 11th at Walsall GUKPT is far more of an achievement and mainly because I simply havent got the free time to be able to play more tournaments ... so for me I have to make every single one count

On reflection I can see where I made a couple of mistakes and most crucially towards the end once in the money (17th up) I was totally tired and just hanging on (dispite having a half decent stack at that point) ... then going card dead, feeling tired (2 hrs sleep night before) I failed to comeback at players who were fresher and able to pull moves so I was shedding chips either way - I could see I wasnt going to be able to separate the "moves" from the strong hands so I dropped gears ... that meant hanging on for a safe 11th place and not a do or die for maybe 16th or making final table ... but all the while I was still feeling that if I could hang on I had a better chance of making final table than I would if I just started getting rash ...

so in that sense I felt that climbing the ladder was also in this case the best approach for making it to the final table and possible win ... after all the guy who won it scrapped in to final 9 as very much the short stack and went on to win it

you've got to be in it to win it as they say

    cheers scrawnybob

Wow Great response bob thanks for taking the time

I agree with most of the stuff you said up there. The dudes comfort level to make big sudden pushes is way above mine and it something that have to aquire when I really start to find my game and what Im comfortable playing. ALso I gotta look confident to make these moves and I dont really know what I look like at a table but Im sure I dont scream seasoned vetern of live play LOL

Yea some of the people in my league I know are good and I try to gravatate towards them but once he started that talk last night, I was hoping he was trying to have me scared if we should happen to have to dual if we are both late in an MTT. Since there is only one card room in town

Well thanks again, Ill be playing another MTT and hopefully can report a good showing.
