Jerry Yang Wins Main Event!!

After countless hours of poker Jerry Yang has emerged has the winner of World Series of Poker Main Event Champion winnng just over $8m. This is his first WSOP cash ever.

Not a great deal is known about him currently except he has 6 kids and a degree in health psychology but in time it will come out. I have heard several stories as to how he played and how he entered (online sat, bought in himself etc).

Will he create similar controversy to Jamie Gold last year or will he do an excellent job as the 'ambasador of poker' for the next year like Joe Hachem, only time will tell!

I doubt anyone - pro or long shot outsider could do as badly as Jamie Gold has for the game - everyone slates him and I'm sure he isn't as bad as alot say but he certainly hasnt done much in terms of tournament results this year or for really promoting the spirit of the game

I'll have to get that really dubious youtube up of him at the WSOP 2006 where it looked pretty damn close to possible collusion with a mate of his - but obviously that's for people to make up their own mind

He was wearing full tilt clothing at the final table, but whether he qualified via a satelitte I dont know for sure, as branded clothing is not always a sign of an online qualifier or pro nowadays. People making televised final tables are being asked by the sites to wear their brand in return of money or tickets to later tourneys.

He seems like he is going to be a great ambassador for our beloved sport, being that he seems deeply family focused and that he is donating 10% of his winnings to charity (how many main event champs have done that, at least straight away?)

Im just surprised with the surge in online poker and the sites giving away SO many seats, espeacially full tilt, that the prize money went down.

Well this year there were several changes to the way it was run that has caused that. This year the WSOP committee changed the prize structure so that it was so top heavy, so the people lower down the cash ladder received slightly bigger percentages, which means the guys higher up the scale received a smaller percentage than they did last year.

Also, only one site was actually giving seats to the main event and that was Ladbrookes. All the other sites were giving the satelite winners the money to cover the buy in but didnt actually have to play in it. For example pokerstars were giving the winners the $10,000 (+buy in fee), money to cover travel and accomadation etc into their accounts and the person had to take the money from the account and physically buy-in themselves this money. But the winners of this could have kept the money in their account, withdrawn it and done whatever they wanted with it. Bu pokerstars were giving the players who did win the money and use it to play in the main event an extra $1,000 to wear pokerstars logo and merchandise.
