Default Regular MTT's vs Add on's and Rebuy's

Just curious on other players take on playing regular MTT's vs Torunies with rebuys and addons.

I know the R + A stuff builds the pot to tournies but I hate these things as they turn into money drains. It almost feels like a free roll type mentality until the first break. Let me double up by betting way more than I should and hope I hit and if I dont then I can just buy. I dont like it, I think it takes away from the game and makes torunies that should be good turn into free for alls. So if I get the hand to knock so and so out then so and so shouldnt be going all in on me and vice versa but if he does, He can get all his chips back and restart.

Now maybe ya'll could enlighten me to whats good about these. I mean if the chip leader already has a lead, letting him add on 2000 more chips is not good. These might work better, NO I cant think of how it would work better, if you say no rebuys until you under 500 chips then somebody is gonna chase you for most of your stack knowing they can just rebuy.

THESE ARE GAMES FOR THE RICH, (I KNOW WELL DONT PLAY THEM YOU DUMARSE ROB) that aint even close to the point. Putting R+A into a tournment makes the first hour like having (double the number of people in the tourny) free roll. HEY ITS ONLY $1 so ILL SEE IF THIS WILL HOLD UP IF NOT IM STILL IN.

I guess the sharks came up with this concept to drain the fish even more. Like the other night a $5 tourny ended costing me $15 (WONDERFUL STUFF HERE $5 R+ $5 A) and that is steep for my blood. I always try to make it my goal in these not to have do anything except buy an add on since most seem to buy the add on. IF THEY WANT A DEEPSTACK TOURNY JUST MAKE IT A DEEPSTACK TOURNY, not well it can be a regular tourny you can turn into a deep stack if you want.

Sometime I just wonder what is the message trying to be sent, play insane the first hour and help build the pot, get beat the first hour and come back and build the pot and then the person you bust out really wants to get you (so then we have psuedo bounty going on)

SO WHAT DO YA'LL GOOD PLAYERS HERE FEEL ABOUT THE R+A CONCEPT. Am I looking at this wrong and missing something that I should be paying attention to. Or do I just look at it just a different type MTT to break the feel of the play . Too me just charge $4 for tourny make it deepstack since thats what the idea is anyway. DEEPSTACK OVER TIME. DAMN I JUST WON $400 earlier who cares if I have to rebuy 10x in the first hour, then I can play seriously.

Ill be playing one of these later (which I am looking foward too) but I know Im probably looking at spending at least $3 (OH BOY ROB YOU THINK YOU CAN HANDLE THAT MUCH) ONCE again not the point, If I got an opportunity to knock someone else, I want one less person in the tourny, not see the chips go back to 2000 chips.

Depends on the poker site for me.

I LOVE R+A on smaller poker sites where I have so many notes and experience with players I will see often.

Sometimes I will buyin in knowing I will not be adding or re-buying because I try to double up from an early aggressive player who wants to put his wallet on the table. Sit on that deepstack and wait it out. Most of those "types" of players are to stupid to see you sitting like a rock.

When Playing Poker is about more than the cards

You should look at rebuy tournaments as deepstack tournaments that really start after the rebuy period is over.

Some people like to play loose and try to build a monster stack in the first hour.

Others play tight and try to pick the loose lunatics off.

You need to decide at the start how much you're gonna spend on it and stick to that.

I usually rebuy at the very start, play real tight and leave it at that.

I'll always add on at the break if I make it there even if I have a big stack.

Hope this helps Dan and GL.

I always rebuy at the beginng str8 away and then also take the addons.

So if it's a $2 tourney u have to look at it as an $8 .

Yes, pretty much what he's said here Dan.
Rebuy/Addon tourneys are a different game. Try to lose the freezeout tourney mentality if you're playing in one & consider a $3rbuy to really be more like a $10-$15 mtt (the min. cash in these is typically around $25 on Pokerstars.. that's 8x the buyin compared to alot of freezeouts where a min. cash is barely more than your initial buyin).

IN rebuys you will usually be on the same table for the first hour (during the rebuy period) & rarely will get moved or have your table break up. This will give you alot of oppurtunity to pick spots based on reads in hopes of building a BIG stack (you absolutely MUST have a big stack after the rebuy period to be competitive in a rebuy toureny). Some players (often good MTT regs. who play higher buyin freezeouts) will play very loose in early levels for rebuy period... raising 10 or 15x.. shoving allin for 100bb's for a 3bet... basically trying to get as many chips into the pot as possible (and some will limp in big if they've got an aggress. guy on their left who is regularly reraising). They create this image but then you'll discover they also wake up with AA & manage to get a couple of way worse hands stacking off & results in buidling up a HUGE stack.
I was in a rebuy satellite recently. I was playing fairly tight at it was above my BRM limits on that particular site but the prizs were BIG.. so I figured I'd risk a bit (I also don't like the site & don't play there). Tickets won were worth over 100x the initial buyin. The guy on my immed. left was shippping & shipping & shipping it in like a madman. He easily rebought 10x in succession. BUT.. then he took down one huge pot after another & ended up having in excess of 30,000 chips by break. His 'crazy' rebuyin also gave him the oppurtunity to get ALOT of chips on our table... chips he was hoping to later pick up & add back to his stack (Daniel Negreanu played a WSOP something along these lines... except I believe he rebought over 40+ times... I forget the exact numbers.. but it was ALOT!).

So.. to sum up. I too at first believed they all played like total donkeys during the rebuy period & thought these tourneys were a joke but it wasn't until I watched this guy's rebuy tourney training video that I began to comprehend some meaning behind the madness (don't get me wrong here... they're not all playing with a plan in mind.. and YAH.. there are ALOT of donks in the mix as well... this is a GOOD thing if you're there with intentions of rebuying and if you figure to have an edge over the field).
    Hope this helps.

.. key statement made my BLuffYou is.. rebuy tournaments are more like deepstack tourneys that start after the 1st break. This is very true in most cases... depending on the blind structure. In the $3rebuy on Pokerstars its a bit different because the blinds really escalate so even though most players are sitting on good-sized stacks after the rebuy period, they're not really all that deep in comparison to the blinds a short whlie later. btw.. 1st in that pays out pretty good, lol.. over $5k for a $3 tourney .. not too bad!! (too bad I've never placed higher than around a $25 cash in it.. sigh)

Most people recommend to always rebuy at the start. I usually don't go with this although I'm sure it's an error on my part. There's just something psychological about having ~1.500 chips & just putting the pile in over a raise & call in early levels. It's like they just have to look you up. I find I'm very often tripling up in the early go.. & if I don't hit any hands or spots then I'll just put the pile in with a suited connector, cross my fingers & then do a double rebuy if I lose (can also begin to generate some action, lol).
I'll always adjust based on the table I'm sitting at. Personally I HATE it if I get stuck on a table of really tight players in the rebuy period who are playing it as if it were a freezeout. You just don't get the oppurtunities for building up a big stack if there aren't alot of chips in play on your table. If it gets like this I might start opening nearly every pot & will 3or 4bet shove wide vs. certain players (it's great when you get a guy rebuying on tilt... & it happens fairly frequently - - I played the $3 rebuy this week and a guy on my table bought in over a dozen times.. .then he actually quit before the rebuy was over, not even sticking around for the add-on after investing so much money in the tourney (not what I'd personally recommend as optimal strategy, lol.... but great when he's on your table!)

The rebuys can be fun Dan. If it's within decent bankroll management.... if you're planning on or are willing to pay ~5-7x the inital buyin and if you feel you have a decent edge on your table.. they can be great! (I know some MTT regs. who once (or if) their online bankroll starts getting depleted (one guy inparticular who plays online MTTs for a living, playing buyins ranging from $1 rebuy up to $500 freezeouts on Fulltilt.. but when his roll is over $10k he withdrawls the extra)... he'll then play a bunch of micro buyin rebuy MTTs as they can be very profitable (they are for him anyways).
There's also the other approach.... take them with a 'single bullet' mentality - - buyin in once.. & cross fingers (play tight & hope to get it in good and have it hold up). You'll be limiting what you might be able to build up in the rebuy period (obv) but if you do succeed in acquiring a stack, the payouts are excellent in many of these tourneys.
Believe it or not, I HATED rebuys a few years ago.. I thought they were ridiculous, waste of time, etc.

YES Thats what I like my post to get people worked up, GL ON THIS TOURNY.

I have to re-read everything yall wrote DAMN YALL ARE GETTING LIKE ME ON THE POSTS, all day reads LOL.

I will admit I do like being able to get back in the tourny if I F' Up but I do like it if all I got to do is buy the add on only because of my dominating play LOL (meaning I m rebuying and adding on) Im just a cheap F' but Im getting better in my line of thinking that I SHOULD BE WINNING And the pots will be bigger at the end. BUt Let me re-read what you and bluff said

I never got the concept of guys rebuyin repeatedly but PO you have opened my eyes.

These players feel they have a good edge over their table and they want to flood the table with chips in hopes of building a huge stack to make a run at the top paying spots of the tourney.

It all makes sense to me now.

These players are not to be confused with the hyper-donks that rebuy like it's going out of fashion and then leave the tourney in disgust when they get pwned for the 17th time lol.

    Exactly ^

In 2006 WSOP $1,000 rebuy, Daniel Negreanu made "48" rebuys!!! (although I've read another report that stated "27" rebuys). He went on to cash in it (I had heard he placed high enough that he made money... "6th" is what one article quoted but I just did a player search on WSOP and it doesn't show Negreanu cashing in a 2006 rebuy event... instead it shows 22nd in a 2008 rebuy.... So kind of a mixed up account of this story.
This was also quoted in one of the many poker books I've read (might have actually been in Harrinton On Holdem?.. maybe not.. Oh.. more likely in Phil Gordon's books).

Regardless of how many rebuys he actually made in the tournament, it is typically +EV to make rebuys if you feel you have an edge over the field. Nothing wrong with taking a one bullet approach but you will need to wake up with a few monsters in early levels.. AND will have to get them paid off (if you don't have a loose image during rebuy you'll be less likely to get paid off when you do pick up a monster). I've sometimes considered playing in $10 rebuys (with a one shot approach) but knowing you'll see alot of MTT regs. in them who are typically playing buyins from $25-$100+... taking the one shot deal would be a pretty huge longshot imo. (better off playing the $3rebuys with intentions of rebuying & adding on).
