    Default MTT strategy question

We've played through the first break of a tournament and due to some up and down play by myself, I was still stuck at the original starting stack of about 3,000 chips.

    Blinds are 200.400 with a 25-chip ante.

A player in MP with about 4,000 chips pushes allin.

I look down at 88 in the small blind.

    Call or fold?

I'm gonna fold. I figure if the other guy went all in he probably has me beat. I'm gonna wait for a better hand.

I would probably fold at this point in time if my tournament life was at stake.. Unless of course i had a read on my opponent on the way they had been playing.. Sometimes 88 is good in this type of position but you are always going to be at risk of yr opponent having a bigger pair or overcards

I would have folded that hand. With higer chip stack I would have called. He either had AK-AJ or low pocket pair. When short stacked, these hands are worth to try. Either double or nothing. If you folded, i think you made a good move.

I guess I define shortstacked differently than others. I considered myself shorstacked here. Of the 42 players left, I was in the bottom 20 percent of chips and I had less than 10BB.

I called, the BB called. BB had A2, OR had A9. River was a 9 to knock me out. i'm OK with my play, but I'm looking to improve so this is definitely something I will give more consideration to in future situations.

instant call.. dont be results oriented and worry about being behind.. at some point you have to get ur chips in the middle and try to build your stack.. 88 may well be behind but it may also be ahead of his range especially if he is shoving with 77+ AA, ATs + AK, + KTs +KQo.. at some point u gotta go so this is a > 2:1 odds ..

I believe that 'call' was the correct play. You were down to what.. 7bb's and you're in SB so you're almost closing out the action (BB's call w A2 is pretty questionable??).
With blinds & antes in play, guy shoving was short-stacked as well so his range could've been fairly wide and 88 is probably +EV, but also considering all the dead money in the pot, the odds you're getting on making the call, the fact that you're shortstacked... seems to point towards call for sure.
It also depends upon what the other stack sizes are like and how they fare in ratio to the blinds (ie. on Carbon tourneys, everyone is shortstacked prior to the bubble).

( times out of 10 I would fold that 88. I don't go into all in or fold till around 3-4 times the big blind and you had more than that. The only times I would call that would be if I was calling the player and not just playing my hands. Meaning if I see this guy pushing with any ace or any 2 paints. Even as the short stack I don't insta call with pocket pairs unless tens or higher. Unless he has and under pair with 88 it's about certain your in a coinflip at best. I just don't like pushing all my chips in the middle with 50% chance of watching the next hand from the rail. 3-4 times the big blind is when I feel I have to push and and hope my hand stands up.

I believe that at best you are probably in a coin flip situation. You have only 200 invested. I believe that too many people think they are protecting blinds or feel that they have to push soon anyhow so they make the call.

I would much rather be the one pushing with 88 than calling with it.
