I gotta go off to work, but I like this game, as I have been exploring HORSE lately. The big difference in the stud games and razz is that there are no community cards. I find it much easier to figure out what others are holding, and by looking at their up cards giving me an edge in figuring odds of making a hand. So much info is out there on the cards visible. For example I had a hand the other day, where the guy had 4 up cards all the same suit. He was betting on 6th street that he had the flush. Well, my straight might not be good, but simple counting of the other cards of that suit told me no way jose., lol
And of course the other biggie is starting 3 selection. major. you gotta give yourself a chance. I see so many folks playing anything as start cards.
anyway, more later, gotta go work

Yah in HORSE you have to pick your spots ...play in the games that players have little knowledge in as in RAZZ and OMAHA hi/lo...STUD ...hint...play and chase if 1st 3 cards r all suited connected and pocket high pairs you stand a good chance in winning plus u r able 2 see all their up cardsr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In stud hi-lo, starting cards that I look for are the low straight and low flush possibilities. Because you get that kinda made hand, you usually go on to scoop (hands that win the whole pot without splitting) the pot.
Low hands are a major factor in just about every round, and I see a lot of players that just play the high side. If you do have a strong pair or trips to start, bet fast and hard, because you want stop low drawing hands.

I like both Stud and Razz but it's hard to find a game where you can play and learn without it costing loads of money. I've played stud on low limit cash tables but you always seem to get someone on there who raises every hand regardless of what they have waiting for luck to get them out of a mess. So if you are trying to develop a decent game you end up folding everything.
I play Stud hi, not Hi/Lo mainly and I think my biggest problem is identifying what is a good starting hand. I get the obvious like 3 of a kind, 3 cards of the same suit, decent pairs and 3 cards to a high straight, but what after that?Leicester 'till I die!

Yeah, those are the optimal hands nb. The next rule of thumb is that the lowest card in your starting 3, should be higher than the other door cards you see. Say you have 10c Qc and 8h showing. Now if your 8h(your lowest card) is better than any other door card, then this admitttedly weak hand could be played for the back door flush, straight, or high pairs. Some one could have a hidden pair that beats you up front, but generally speaking, you give your self better odds if you follow this rule with less than optimal starting hands. Note, don't try this rule with hi/lo, lol Also nb, patience, patience. wait for the good starters at all costs if you are at a table with those raise every street/every hand fools.
Also, when an A is your door card, but your pockets are nada/zilch, go ahead and fold. Don't go fishing with this kind of crap hand. Others will see this, and give u more respect later on when you have a made AA. and this sets you up to be able to bluff successfully in the later stages.
Of course the ante and bring-in can start eating at you. and if you are folding 60-70% of the time, folks know what you will be playing. if the others are consistently showing low, medium pairs, and double paired, then open your card range with rainbow high card combos.Last edited by villaridge; 08-03-2009 at 04:28 PM.
