Smile What Draws You to Online Poker?

Online poker has become a daily part of my life over the past few years. I needed to keep my mind busy after a long time chronic illness became worse and I unfortunately had to stop working. My job had entailed constant multi-tasking, but now, physically I couldn’t do much. My mind was still raring to go most of the time and it wasn’t long before I found that online poker was just the outlet I needed to satisfy my craving for “brainwork.”

I have also discovered a socialization aspect I didn’t think I’d find playing online poker. My illness keeps me home most of the time, so my online poker and forum friends have become very important to me. I find myself wondering what everyone’s been up to and am drawn to the forums to find out, every time I turn on the computer.

Another reason I play poker online is that my kids are just about all grown up. Over the last couple of years I have had to replace some of the time I spent “mothering” with other things. It just so happens to be that online poker has been something that helps to distract me from the “empty nest” thing. I really love and enjoy my family, they always come first for sure, but I've been learning that it's kinda fun to enjoy something just for myself too.

Oh yeah, and winning money is fun too!

not quite sure what origionally drew my to online poker.....im sure the biggest part was seeing the online sites advertised when i watched poker on tv....then there was the moneymaker thing...the social interaction is a big part for me now...and besides i couldn't take watching spongebob/power rangers/rugrats/......the list goes on.....lol....plus my wifes work scedual if im home she is working...expecially on weekends....she works 16 hours every saturday and 16 every sunday..i need some kind of interaction with adults...lol..and you can only do so much with the kids before they get bored with you....

I play to win cash and have fun. I play a little while win a little then cash out. Redeposit some of it at another site and spend the profit. I recently bought a nice 24 inch flat panel monitor and upgraded my computer on winnings money. I am currently clearing a bonus at Full Tilt so that I can have a small roll there, deposit somewhere else to get out some of my freeroll rolls. I have $50-$100 at a few sites. I hope to consolidate all of those into a digital SLR and a new mattress set.

When I quit dealing poker and retired, I vowed I would never play on-line poker (this after talking to other dealers who hated it, mainly because of the donks and bad players they ran into). After playing in the real world (and actually making a fair bit of money), the good players picked up on my style and it became harder to play against them, especially since they had a lot more money to play with than I did. Also since I didn't have the funds to enter tourneys, and the majority of players only played 1-2 no limit, and to a lesser extent 4-8 fixed limit, I decided to try on-line poker.
At first it was easy to understand the rantings of my dealer friends, and basically was in a losing situation. However I did like the choice of games available (ie. different buy-ins, sit-n-gos, tourneys), and the different formats. Spotting the 4kingpoker forum, I decided to join and am glad that I did. This provided me with the interest I needed to continue playing on-line. After a few months, I feel I am improving my play and now enjoy playing on-line, especially with the team format and the people I play with.
I still play in the real world (but not as often and not necessarily the same way) and when it's -20c outside, it sure is nice to play in the comfort of my own home.

A mistake made in the past is not as important as the lesson learned from it.

Good point on that comfort of the home thing. I guess I play online a lot more often than at a real casino because I play short sessions and it would be silly to drive an hour and a half to a casino sit until I am up $20, and drive home. At home I can log off up $20 and log onto another site....which is my current bankroll management strategy.

Online poker is my only option unless I want to drive for hours. They do allow poker for charity in my state but the rake is huge because a portion of the profits have to go to charity so there are no real casinos.

It's also something you can do while doing other work on the computer, you can do it everyday, and you have the capability of playing muliple games at the same time.

    Honestly the traffic.....

You can not get good practice for MTT's else where.

Poker 24-7...you can play for 15min or 15 days.

    I like free tournaments also!

I was an avid sports bike rider before i had kids. I used to go out every sunday with my mates to the hills around Melbourne. Riding bikes was my soul hobby and passion.

When my third kid was born and the other two were getting to the stage of playing footy, swimming, cricket etc I just found that i did not have the time to leave the house on a sunday. I was a lost soul for a while until i found poker.

The beauty of online is that I can do it at home at night when the kids are in bed and i don't have to spend any more money than the initial buy in. Basically its the convenience that draws me to it and I now have a similar passion towards poker as i had with my motorbikes...
