So I had a pretty good month in July, and I am wondering... how do you balance improving your play versus winning money? For example, I have found for me that I can normally play 1 SNG (6 to 27 man) and 1 Double or Nothing (10 man top half double up) and have a good idea what it is going on on both tables.
Once I get beyond 2 tables, I find almost all of plays become very mechanical and based more on hand strength, pot odds, and if I am lucky notes on a player. This is not to say that I cannot win money multi-tabling, but the focus becomes more about the "right" play and winning money.
When playing only 1 table (or 1 table and a double or nothing), I find I have time to think, try to make some moves, avoid moves and traps by others, etc. I caveate the double or nothing table since the goal is relatively simple -- finish in top five out of ten.
I actually play mostly for entertainment at this time, so both are important to me, but curious your thoughts...
If playing purely to improve your game, I would think maybe a 70% single table SNG and 30% MTT SNG (18, 27, 45, and 180) would be the right mix. Heavier on the single table to get final table experience (with the realization it is an even stack starting final table), and the MTT for experience in getting to final tables with different chip stacks. This is then augmented with reading and understanding the various play styles, poker styles, etc.
If purely trying to make money, it would seem SSS is the way to go. Quick hits on cash ring tables. Highly mechanical, simple decisions, and turn it up, 6, 8, 10, or even 12 tables.
I find the latter, while often profitable, much less enjoyable. I find the former, much more enjoyable, but less profitable (esp. on a per hour basis).
Any thoughts and/or opinions welcome and appreciated.
