Dear Ms. King,
Thank you for taking the time to contact me. I appreciate hearing from you.
In 2006, I was one of 317 members who voted to restrict internet gambling. In the four years since, I have come to the conclusion that prohibiting online gambling is hypocritical and results in a lost opportunity to both better track and police these behaviors as well as generate needed revenue. Gambling over the internet was not reduced; in fact millions of Americans are using the internet daily to gamble on-line through offshore gambling operations.
Certain types of online gambling were exempted from the prohibition, such as fantasy football leagues, horse and harness racing, and lotteries. It does not make sense to single out internet gambling for prohibition, which is largely indistinguishable from other types of gambling. Regulating this industry will allow for enforcement of restrictions against gambling by minors and will also enable US regulators to track accounts and funds to reduce illegal activities.
It makes more sense to redirect the $40 billion raised by taxing the profits of offshore gambling operations to reduce the deficit and support programs that help families and children.
Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with me. Please continue to be in touch
Sincerely,
