Default Russia, Gambling Fines Outside Government Safe-Zone

Russia's United Russia Party, headed by Vladmir Putin, has introduced a new bill cracking down on online gambling outside the "safe-zones". The proposed bill is to cover a loophole which was left after July 2009 when Russia made it illegal to operate land based casinos and poker rooms, the government restricted gambling to four specific zones in the country.

After the 2009 law was passed computer establishments were popping up to provide access to online poker and casinos, illegally. The new law in attempts to shut out gambling outside of the safe zones are calling for fines between 500 to 2000 rubles ($16-to-$64-or-€12-to-€49)

A member of the United Russia Party, Ivan Savvidi said, “Before, the law concentrated on suppliers of gambling, and now the gamblers themselves are responsible.”

Irina Tulubyeva, a Russian lawyer is in favor of the bill who apparently doesn't understand how far people will go to play poker said, “If the gamblers know that they will pay a fine, there will be fewer of those willing to play. And they are becoming partners in crime, even though the main punishment will still be given to the organizers.”

side note to Russians; if your a wining player pay the fine, if your a losing player say you have an addiction and need help (seems to work in democratic countries)

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin (former KGB officer) also wants to put the smack down on slot machines. “People are trying to escape responsibility by using machines that are capable of doing everything that is banned by the law,” said Irina Tulubyeva, a partner from the law firm Tulubeya, Osipov and Partners

Co-author of the bill a member of the Federation Council said “I have been looking for a definition of slot machine for a long time and finally found it. It is the most important part of my bill.” Really? It took "a long time" to figure out what a slot machine was, that is scary in itself.

Once again another country after pillaging your paycheck and taxing your goods and services now want to control how you spend what is left of your money. One can only imagine what it is like to have your home poker game raided by the upstanding Russian police, lead by an ex KGB officer.

It hurts doesn't it? Your hopes dashed, your dreams down the toilet.

Still rather pay a $64 fine in Russia then a felony charge in the USA

Makes you wonder tho, we live in a time on earth where you can be jailed for playing poker, a time where the strongest country in the world is run by Communist leadership (China) and one of the best basketball players is a white guy from Canada (Steve Nash), could go on....but just making note of the crazy world we live in.

To bad we can't go back to when democracy meant something, back in the Roman era

Well, this whole thing is a load of crap! Why do they care whether we play poker or not? I understand from PPA that in the US the law makers are trying to put a 15 month total ban on poker in every state. If you've got money any place, now is the time to get it. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for ewallet express to give me my money. Bet this law will pass a whole lot sooner than the tax laws.

Did you know back in the Roman era if you got voted out of the Senate, you were actually out out. Not like now adays where you can still lose an election and still be in. Accountability is surely lacking these days.

As jeffsbabe said, why do they care any-ways...
government doesn't care the auto industry makes car that go well beyond the speed limit, nor do they care about forcing food chains to make healthy food, while at the same time the cost of healthy food is getting expensive.

Government interest has fallen away from providing for the people to some how they think they need to protect us from ourselves.
