[I]Republican Congressman to introduce online gambling legislation
Posted by Steve Ruddock on Feb 19, 2011 Posted in Legal Poker News

Among the changes in the Campbell/Frank legislation will be:

    · Elimination of the 15-month “Blackout” period
    · Allowing worldwide customers
    · An increase to the number of States that would automatically opt-in
    · Establishing a tax system for players
    · Ensuring that current online poker providers to US players are not unfairly discriminated against

Yea the blackout period is the main thing that needs to be eliminated.

    Default looks more promising

    hi

this amended version looks much more promising

no blackout period and also worldwide player base are two crucial things

    a) because anything less would be afaiks illegal under international trade law

    b) because with a blackout it unfairly bars non US sites from operating when they should be allowed to - The US casinos will have to learn to operate in a competitive international market and not try to get favours or advantage ... I'm pretty sure they will leverage every last bit of brand advantage the moment the doors open anyway so that alone is going to give everyone else a run for their money + I very much doubt they will play that fair and will likely try to make out like everyone previous was a rogue outfit etc etc

lets hope this bill or something similar (ie better) gets through soon

the uigea is the ugliest attempt at regulation / prohibition ever and actually has in itself caused more (not less) uncertainty / unreliability etc than ever before when the international gambling industry was just left alone to run itself - things back then actually werent so bad

    cheers scrawnybob

    Default Barney Frank

this has dead at the Senate all over it

Unfortunately this is the type of bill where politicians play politics and with out the House and Senate held by either or same parties not much will get done.

I know the article says Campbell is teaming up with Barney Frank to introduce the legislation in a "bipartisan" fashion, that is something that rarely happens.

Anyone know when it is suppose to be introduced?
The US Government has a few bigger issues currently at hand, one that might even shut the government down in a couple weeks. (Its extreme and true, it could happen)

Just to clarify a common misconception, most bills that pass actually enjoy at least some bipartisan support. Only a relatively small number of roll call votes are contested (a majority of one party voting pro and a majority of the other party voting con). I'd have to look it up to be sure, but I think the figure hovers at around 15% or so.

That said, I wouldn't be too terribly worried about Democratic opposition here. The ports bill that ushered in UIGEA was largely a Republican creation. If the Republican House can get behind it, I'd imagine the Senate is less of a roadblock. Harry Reid already pushed for an ill-conceived but (I think) well-intentioned legalization of online poker, and the expansion of gaming is certainly in the interests of his constituency (NV).

But yeah, definitely time to write an email. From my conversations with state-level legislative staffers, though, I wouldn't bother writing much in the comment box; that part usually gets ignored and the email gets counted as another email from [x].

Sorry, Bob thought that "Posted by Steve Ruddock on Feb 19, 2011 Posted in Legal Poker News" was enough. Lesson learned.

Not sure I'd consider it well-intentioned. Such an obvious payback for their support in getting him re-elected.

Let's see, we have a product, but restrict marketing only to Walmart and only if they have been in business for 5 years and carry 5,345,890 other products. And no new businesses can carry that product. And noone can buy the product for 18 months.

There isn't a drug strong enough to make that rational.
