I agree with Jetnine, but I dont think anyone is trying to be Doyle Brunson or Action Dan, and if they are I'd advise the to stop. I have read Super System and am in the process of reading Harringtons book. I have also read Phil Hellmuths book and Amarillo Slim's book. I read these books because they are all filled with great advice from some of the best players to ever play the game, but also it gives me ideas and helps to develop my own game by taking what they have to say in mind. If things they suggest doesnt work for me then I don't use them, but who better to learn things from than guys like these, and if I could take little bits from each of them and merge them into my game then my game would improve. However you will have to combine playing experience and book reading and watching better players and use it all to improve your game.
I agree that you need to develop your own style but I think this still needs to be firmly based on the fundamentals of poker - as that is straight maths and no getting away from it .
Reading books shouldnt be viewed as learning a formula - becasue everything in poker is situational - but put it like this -
Reading lots of books will certainly do your game no harm - NOT reading any books almost certainly put you at a disadvantage, if only to understand what everyone else is reading
I recently bought the my first poker book. It's "No Limit Holdem Theory and Pracetice" by Davis Sklansky and Ed Miller. Parts of the book are confusing by the way they describe things. But, all in all, this is a great book, and I have learned a tremendous amount and have improved my game. I do reccomend this book.
