Played in the Pokerstars Sunday Hundred Grand last night and it has to be my best performance ever. I finished in 267th for a payout of $105, while this is not my biggest prize I think it’s the best I have ever played, and to come 267th out of 17,500 entrants was not easy.
My first table was really strange. I have never seen a table so tight it was crazy. For the first 3 levels I think I was the only person who raised a pot. I ended up raising anything that was folded round to me when I wasn’t UTG or UTG +1 and picked up the pot there and then. When we reached the 4th level the players on the table started to limp a lot more, one player in particular was limping nearly every pot and would either fold to a raise or fold to any continuation bet. When he did raise pre-flop he made real obvious that he had missed the flop and stealing the pots from him was pretty easy. He even started chatting in the box about how I kept hitting the flop when he didn’t, but in fact I was hardly hitting and he was just making it real easy to take it away from him. He was becoming more and more frustrated and limped again, and I looked down at some very nice Aces, so I raised 3x BB (which is the raise I had been putting in all night) and he called, more out of frustration I think. The flop comes down As 7c Ac, giving me some nice Quads, I bet 200 into a pot of 900 hoping not to scare him off and maximise my winnings. He calls and the turn comes a blank, so I bet 300 into a pot of 1300 and he quickly calls, which screamed a draw, although I was possibly pocket 7s. The river comes Kc, I bet 300 hoping that he was on a draw and made his flush, or did have 7s so had a FH either way he would raise, which he did, he raised all in so fast I think his mouse was smoking. I called, obviously, and took down the pot.
He then stuck around and abused me from the rail saying that betting so small with Quads was such bad play and was allowing him to catch. I had to smile as the other players were telling him he was an idiot and that I played well, and I just kept quiet and let them argue with him for me lol.
No big hands to speak of for a while, I managed to build my stack up and keep it above average until I lost half my stack in one big pot. One guy limped while I was in BB, flop was checked with 2d, Kd, 6c and the turn brings 9 diamonds. I bet about half the pot holding Qd9s, river brings a Jd. I bet the pot with a Queen high flush and he takes ages to do anything and waits right to the very last minute to raise all in. I called thinking that if he had the Ad he would have go all-in quicker, but he showed Ad8d, so fair play to him.
I managed to build my stack back up with some nice hands and some good aggression, and a little bit of luck. I raised on the button 8,5 and the BB called, possibly as I had been stealing the blinds a fair few times. The flop comes down 5,7,5, so I bet just over half the pot and he raises all-in and I call, which puts me all-in. I have to think for a while as if I fold I could probably fold my way into the money, but if I call and win I’m in good position to move up the pay scale so I call and has A-7. I survive and move up the positions.
We then go on a break, and when we come back it lasts one hand until the bubble breaks. I then go for about 45minutes with out much, and the marginal hands I get I have to fold as the blinds were forcing a few stacks to push and pray, and the blinds and antes begin to dwindle my stack to half of what it was which begins to put me near that category. I manage to get some big hands in quick succession which sees me treble my stack.
I then get moved tables to a table with the 2 chip leaders, both on my right which was no fun. I manage to steal a few blinds and antes, which keeps my stack rising slightly but the blinds begin to raise quickly and my stack now sits at just over 10BB. I then get queens and put in a raise of 3BB and get called by the chip leader. The flop comes 9 high with 3 diamonds, I push all-in and get called. He has Qd and a 9, and the call represents like 10% of his stack so I would have done the same. He hits a 3rd 9 on the turn and the river blanks which knocks me out. In hindsight I probably should have just shoved it all-in pre flop. Ah well, I was happy with my play and $105 for an $11 buy-in can’t be sniffed at lol.
