venue championship
ok 3rd freeroll bar league i have dominated and made the championship at the end of the month. we start with 11 players at one table. so my strategy is to sit and wait for a big hand. i limp from the cut off with ace three of clubs in the first hand hit an ace on the flop call a bet and reraise on the turn. 2 callers one with king high and the other a pair of queens. river comes and it completes all draws so now a jack makes the nut straight or 2 spades makes the flush. i fold to the woman first to act who has now made two pair, the guy on the button calls with the straight. good fold me. i then proceed to sit for the next 30 minutes and only play position poker. i raise from the button twice and steal both times. i raise from the cut off and steal once. i raise from the button with two suited cards and get called by 4 players so i lose. finally i wake up to pocket kings. at this point ive stolen enough pots to have around 40k (started with 25). i limp in third to act hoping to get some action. the two players behind me fold and the player on the button limps. a buddy of mine, chuch, who always walks into me having kings whenever i have them moves all in. chuck has a gigantic chip lead at this time after catching 3 tens with ace ten against pocket kings and pocket queens. i quickly call and am all in. he shows jacks. flop comes king of dimes 9 3 of dimes. turn is an ace of dimes and the river is a 2 of hearts. i just knew i would lose this pot but got lucky to fade the river. the next hand i play chuck is again all in, this time with ace ten. he has about 20 k and after i skyrocketed to the chip lead i look down at nines and make the quick call again. 663 on the flop ace on the turn. down to 60
bleed myself on blinds a bit and it comes to a battle of the blinds. the small blind raises. now i dont put him on a huge pair because he likes to slow play those preflop to get as much money after the flop as he can. so i put him on big slick or ace queen. i look down to pocket nines again. i ask him how much he has left and reraise when i see that me going all in will not put me all in. as suspected he had ace king and flops a king. turns a king and im down to 6k with the blinds at 3k 6k. im done. from the penthouse to the outhose in 10 hands. i blame pocket nines.
now i know with pocket nines you want to win preflop, but when im sure that i have the best hand even if it is going to be a race im going to get my money in. if i win either of those races that is one less player to worry about and one spot closer to the money. anywho. both of the guys i doubled up actually cashed and it is cool with me. they are both great guys and deserved it, though i really wanted to win.
