    Default position or cards?

What do you think is more important, position or your hole cards? I really think position is more important if you have the guts to play it, no matter what your cards. Especially towards end of tournaments when you need to steal a blind once in awhile. Sometimes I'll get disappointed by flop and be last to act and as I'm getting ready to check, I realize they didn't hit anything either and a small bet takes the pot. Obviously, so many more things work in late position (trapping, stealing, etc.). What are your thoughts?

To me position is secondary to your cards, no hand get out. Why waste chips with junk. I see a lot of players calling with junk in late position and wasting chips. Lots of luck with those calls.

Depends on what format we're playing (if an MTT... what's the structure like?.. what stage are we at?.. then of course stack sizes, what level it is, etc. then also breaks down to the individual hand & of coure the player(s) involved & the action before us.

I think hole cards are more important than position. But position is very important. But if you don't have cards, why bother to play? I am patient. But I am a cash game player, so it may not be the same for MTT. But, I would never go into a hand just because I am the button and I am planning on bluffing. Maybe some circumstances at the table could make this a good move, but it will cost you, I think. Especially if someone flops a monster. They will check, smooth call, check smooth call, then pop you on the river. It is a good way to get trapped. Bluff when the opportunity comes, but don't get into a hand just to bluff. This is all my opinion, and people may disagree, but it is how I feel.

In that case i wouldn't fold i would limp just to see the flop if the blinds were low enough that is.

Unfortunately in MTT's online the blinds are so agressive on most sites, there's a small window where you can afford to make plays. Leak too many chips early and it's not long before you are in dire straits.

It's a real pleasure to play a deep stack tourney, with slow blinds.

In ring I think position is more important than your hole cards. You aren't fighting blinds for one thing. If it's folded to me in late position I'm raising with almost any 2. UTG and UTG+1 are also good positions to steal. I hate mid position unless I have a monster.

I have changed my play somewhat since I posted the earlier reply to this post. I now think that position is EVERYTHING in cash games. Any hand, and I mean any hand, is better on the button. For example, if you see the flop (on the button), with one other player, and he checks to you, a 2/3 pot size c-bet is a winner 65% of the time. In the long run, playing position is smart. But a player must be wary of position if more than three people see the flop. If you didn't hit the flop, and 3 people check to you, it is a losing play in the long-run to c-bet here (odds are someone has you beat, with 4 players in the hand). Only 3 people or less in the hand is profitable to c-bet in position. Food for thought. Peace.
