Ask about the rake % before playing a home cash game
I was invited to a home cash game yesterday (nothing big - two 9-handed tables, one was $0.50/$1 and the other one $1/$2) and the most frustrating thing happened.
Having played about three hands, I noticed that an unusually huge amount of chips were taken out of the pot by the dealer. I knew that the game was raked (have to pay for the dealers), but the rake seemed way too high. Noticing that, I asked the dealer what's the rake at this table and he replied: "its 15%", continuing the game like nothing was wrong!!!
Needless to say, I stood up and walked away the very next moment! I mean - a game with a rake of 15% is not beatable. There is practically no way you can win money in it. So here's a piece of advice: prior planning to join a home cash game, find out about the rake so you wouldn't have to walk away after the first few hands!
