At the first part of the tourney i play really really tight and then at a certain blind amount i have tendency to get aggressive....and of course at the end very agressive...i pace myself throughout depending on the type of players im at a certain table. When i get switched to a new table i play tight until i get "a feel" about the players.....and increase agression or not.....type of players really determine my agression style.
it was always accepted that tight agresive in the long run was the most profitable.......... though a good player who plays loose aggresive can do well as long as he knows when hes beat.
but it also depends on the table and you have to ajust your style..... let say you have a loose agressive at your table ....whos totaly bulling the table .... then it may pay for you to change to tight passive ..... and when you get a good hand like aa kk preflop or catch trips or a flush or straight post flop if you play passive the loose aggresive will try an bluff you off the pot
there is now an new way to play due to the large influx of nordic players....but the new and final and new style.... is...
5. Super Agressive ... this is 90% of the time all in or nothing any pocket pair any position.... all in catorgery 1 2 and maybe 3 in the sklansky charts and then a 5 to 10 % bluff..... this style is still under review as compaired to tight agressive
well thats just my thoughts but i did vote tight agressive
I think the super aggressive approach which is also tight on the hand requirements isnt going to be a winning style long term but its certainly interesting all or nothing approach
loose super aggressive / tight super aggressive - the nordic style seems to be effective online because once players have it their head the player who is betting super aggressive is also a regular bluffer / or loose - therefore will call a big bet when the super aggressive has the nuts
and also is likely to be intimidating players to fold marginal hands - when the allin raiser could equally have nothing
generally the nordic approach relies on stealing a growing sizable pot which has the interest of a couple of other players - with a massive re-raise or all-in generally either on the blinds (preflop and post flop) or on the button / late position (pre-flop, on the flop, turn or river) -
they dont tend to play in mid position so much as far as I can see
I think the super agressive style can be effective - but it definately has much much wider bankroll swings - if you playing it you have to have a very big bankroll as your going to be reloading - alot
I've tried this approach for a while - It does work - but playing standard tight aggressive is more predictable and has less dramatic swings and bankroll isssues
the super agressive approach is becoming more valid in certain games - but the allin or nothing approach you mention I would describe as a super ultra agressive as it doesnt have much variation
the loose aggressive style similar to Negreanu is also effective but requires a good understanding and feel - as your effectively playing much more in the margins of drawing hands - both for you and your opponents
the ultra super aggressive is the exact opposite - where your concern is you dont get your solid allins called (and paid off) enough to cover the times your 33 etc get beaten
nice thread BTW

tight aggressive definetely for me because when you do play hands, people usually think they are quality because i myself only play about 25% of my hands so that gives me opportunities to bluff, and also gives me nice reads in knowing that if they reraise me, they know im playing quality hands, so they probably have some kind of a hand themselves.
also, this depends on the table as well. if much of the table is sitting out, then i will play most hands. but when everybody or almost everybody is sitting in, it also depends if it is a tournament or a ring game. during a tournament, I usually play extremely tight-agressive in the early stages, only playing AA, KK, QQ, AK, AQ, and JJ. in this phase of the tourney, i consider JJ to be a marginal hand to call a raise pre-flop. after the first break, I tend to loosen up more, playing additional hands like AJ, 1010, A10, 99, A9, KQ, KJ, QJ, K10, Q10, and J10. i still play intelligently despite opening up my game. then, when i get close to the money, i usually tighten up again, only playing the first set of hands mentioned above. finally, when i get to the final table, I tend to return to the more loose style of play. In a ring game, however, I only play the six premium hands I mentioned above.
