In browsing through various Omaha texts, I keep running across
references to having a wrap or a "wraparound straight draw" or similar
terminology - without the term "wraparound" being clearly defined. So
finally I pull out my copy of "The Official Dictionary of
Poker" (compiled by Michael Wiesenberg) to see if I can find the
definition of wraparound and just what is so good about having a
wrap. The [verbatim] definition of a wraparound - straight from the
dictionary, page 274 - is as follows:
wraparound. (n) In Omaha, a situation in which your four downcards
consist of three consecutive cards, which combine with two cards of
the flop to form five consecutive cards, so that a large number of
cards on the turn or river give you a straight. For example, your
downcards are 6-5-4-A, and the flop is 7-8-K. You can make a straight
with any of 17 cards, any 6, 5, or 4, three each of which remain, or
any 9 or 3, of which four of each remain. Compare with FULL WRAP and
INSIDE WRAP.
Either I'm confused or there's a typo in the given example, because I
don't see any way that a 3 on the turn (or river) would give you a
straight. I see how a 9 gives you a 9-high straight - 9-8-7-6-5 - but
a 3 doesn't compute, given the 7-8-K flop and the four downcards.
Also, with the definition given above, I see only thirteen outs (not
seventeen) to a straight. I looked at the definitions for FULL WRAP
and INSIDE WRAP (in the book) and they make sense.
I suspect that a true wraparound, (like its cousins the FULL WRAP and
the INSIDE WRAP), has more than 13 outs, so I suspect a typo in the
given definition.
At the risk of embarrassment, could somebody either straighten out my
confusion or show me an example of a wraparound that has 17 outs.
I think your right. Who ever wrote it, messed it up. if 3 of your cards in your hand are in a row, you loose one of the end numbers. the 3 which is 4 outs. The example should have been 7-8-K flop and 5-6-9 or 6-9-10 in your hand.
