Quick question that probably seems stupid. Say one person has a4 the other has a5. The cards are AK1098. Does a5 win or is it a split pot?

only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked.....it would be a split pot because there is a higher kicker on the board than the kicker in both hands

Like the other guy said, a split pot. In NL Holdem the best 5 card hand wins the pot. In this case you both would have a pair of A's and both of your kickers are lower than whats on the board so the board comes into play and therefore splits the pot.........

Cheers, there was just a bit of confusion at our home games. So say the 8 of the 5 cards was changed to a two, the a5 would win yeah?

Nope, because the best hand for player 1 (holding A4) is: AAKT9
and the best for player 2 (holding A5) is: AAKT9

With a board like this: AKT32 you have:
best hand for player 1 (holding A4) is: AAKT4
best hand for player 2 (holding A5) is: AAKT5

(could be a flush there, but we are not considering that)

Default "Pros"

Itīs not a stupid question.
In fact, even "pros" sometimes get a little confused about these kinds of pots:

YouTube - NBC Heads Up Poker - Kristy Gazes vs Chad Brown

LOL

Stunning how even pros can make a simple mistake like that. Oh well, guess everyone missteps at the table at some point.
