To be successful at this game, you need a combination of both. In order to win tournwys, you need to be willing to take a stab at pots that you will not win at showdown. By only playing solid, premium hands, you will miss the flop a majority of the time and may have to continuation bet to push away 2nd pair or an opponent who called you with a better ace or pocket pair. By only playing a rock style, you'll give away more chips post flop and put yourself in a position that you have to gamble where you would not done so otherwise. Be selective when bluffing, or you'll go broke making a donk play.

i think it really depends on what level you are playing at. i also think that 'bluffing' needs to be set up by taking the initiative from the get-go in a hand.
you have to be the preflop raiser. and perhaps you aren't bluffing with AK high on the flop when you get someone to fold, but it makes it easier to reprepsent that hand if you raised preflop.
i've all but stopped 'bluffing' at the microlimits. someone will look you up with any piece of a flop. i'm more interested in value betting,.
Pirates, I've learned from experience that you do not have to be the initial raiser to pull off a successful bluff. It is easier to bluff an opponent once you underestand their playing style. On occasion, the initial raiser is just trying to steal blinds and antes. This is a golden opportunity to reraise and take the pot down preflop. You could also smooth call and then take over the betting postflop. This is a strategy that also works at micro limits, but you have to have a solid image and ability to read your opponents.

I rarely bluff but when I do it usually pays off. Usually when I bet I think I have the better hand. I usually play poker with alot of patience just waiting for decent hands but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get chips.
Timing is absolutely everything, even at a digital poker table you need to be able to read those little digital opponents. Is your bluff going to work? How much is effective? Is an all-in more effective than a large raise? or a small raise (value bet)? Gotta know it all
Timing is important, but I think knowing the people at your table is the most important and crucial knowledge when making a bluff. Having the guts to throw down the bluff with 4 clubs when you're hand is all hearts... The guts combined with your knowledge create the perfect bluff.
Play mostly premium hands. Bluff when you have a good chance of not getting called. Like when you are last and no one has bet and the flop looks like crap, no face cards and a rainbow. A pot size bet should take the pot as you will be figured as having hit trips.
