Hello All,
It ahs to be said that the Player I most respect, that I have seen, has got to be Gus Hansen. I do not think he could teach you much as I think he has just a natural talent at spotting weakness.
I saw him once in a tournamenet where the commentaters had a field day. You could hardly see him behind his chip stack and he was calling with rags. It was very simple what he was doing, but genious. He was calling with rags with the same person and no matter what was on the board Gus was re-raising and taking the pot. It happened a few times and (other than the other players i guess) seemed to see this. I do base my game on how he plays.
I must point out that I have never read a poker book and I am subscribed to 'PokerPlayer' magazine purely for the freerolls they do. The magazine actually reads like a comic.
I taught myself because I am a strong believer of the 'Once bitten, Twice shy' rule of learning. You're brain is naturally geared to stopping you making the same mistake twice and the worse the mistake, the more you will not do it again.
I lost quite a bit of money whene I first started out (back whene I had full time employment!), that was the expendable cost I gave myself to learn poker.Hard knocks, the best learning curve you can have. As you may have noticed I do a lot of thoery on poker that I try my best to work out for myself. Again reading something and learning it (especially at my age) is very hard but working things out in you're brain for yourself means that it will be engrained in you're mind for a long time to come. Reading a book on poker would, ibelieve, just make you emulate the authors style of play. If you teach yourself then you will develope your own style of play. Which is Gold at the table.
I think I have done a post like this before, so if I am repeating myself. Sorry.
I hope this post does not sound big-headed. I still have plenty of flaws that I will probably never iron out. You just have to bite the bitter pill, learn from it and move on.
Hope this is interesting reading and if it does sound brattish/braggish, I do appologize as I feel very strongly about self teaching in every walk of life.
Thankyou for listening,
Dom
Mike Matusow I think would be the worst teacher of poker.......... But definately the most fun. lol.
