    Default Pocket 8's Discuss

I want you to explain what you would do in this particular situation. I want you to explain WHY as well. There is no right answer (as with any what would you do) question.

You sit 2 positions before the dealer. You are dealt pocket 8's (not suited). It is a table with 7 people. You are playing a 3 table tournament. You sit on about 2k. Starting stack was 1500. You are not quite to the first break. Blinds are 25/50. Your table has 8 players still on. There were two callers before you. So currently the bb and two players are in, there is the player to your left the dealer and the blinds left to act. The bb is playing like a jackal. A lot of different hands. The rest of the players seem to be playing some form of TAG poker with varying degrees of aggressiveness.

    Whatcha gonna do? Y?

with the blinds at 50/25, and 2 limps. i also just limp here for pot control. the so called jackal will likely raise, and i don't want to call a reraise with pocket 8s (not suited)

so say he raises 3 to 4x. i would call and look to flop a set, and set mine his ass.
if you miss the flop you should fold. to early to get in a big pot with 8s. if you hit your set, the jackal and maybe 1 or 2 of the limpers are going to pay you off.

Hmmm, intresting two version raise standard 4BB or just limp and wait the flop.
I think to help for you if you had knowledge more player. TAG or LAG?! You see Pokertracker or note.
You played for this knowledge you raise or just limp!

    Damn-you beat me to it.

Anyway, I would limp expecting bb to raise and depending on raise probably call. No sense raising and taking the chance of getting reraised because then I would probably have to fold.

I think with pocket 8's, your relying on a low board more than trips - and combination 8 and below on the flop is good - 5,6,7 is a nice position to be in + there is always the possibilty of trips i guess but quite rare

These are tricky but I raise 4x BB in this situation. Try and win the pot outright or at very least chase out weak over cards. Even a jackle has to respect an act of strength so if he feels lucky he will chase with medium hand but I do not think he would reraise with medium hand in this situation. There for if you get reraised you can get away from pot relatively cheaply and if not than you go to the flop with control. Then if the flop comes high and you are heads up you can continuation bet and possibly still win. Instead of limping into multiplayer pot and then having to fold when you don't hit set.

I just feel like you have more ways to win with strong raise preflop.

Your in fairly position stack wise with 2k.I would just call a cheap 25 ante.I would call a small raise to chase the tripps.Your not showing any hand strength by just calling so if you hit the tripps you stand to make a big payoff.

Hard to know where to start as you say it's a 7 seat table but there are 8 players on it, the bb is a jackal and the rest are some sort of TAG yet there are 2 limpers before you.
Many different answers but in the situation you describe, if your reasonably certain the bb will raise, I would definately limp in, let the bb make the initial raise, and if the other limpers fold, re-raise the bb. If your read on him is right and he's on a steal he should fold.
