JO: Mike, I learned it from you. You always told me this was the rule. Rule number one: Throw away your cards the moment you know they can't win. Fold the fucking hand.


This is a skill that in my opinion is one of the biggest stepping stones or dividers between average players and great players. I think being able to fold a good hand is it. If you watch any great tournament player there is always the big hands where they hit the nuts and they have the skill to get paid off... but where they win the tournament is in their impressive and great folds.

Folding hands at the right time is the most impressive poker skill.

I think you have a valid point, but isn't the most impressive skill that of 'being able to read your opponent' to be able to guess with a fair degree of certainty that your hand is beat and you can fold it? or even just knowing what your opponent has, and being able to take him off the hand by representing a better one?

So I would say hand reading skills are the quality that the best players possess that make them the best.

Note: I heard that Annette Oberstad (not too sure about the spelling) a pro on betfair once won a freeroll tournament without actually looking at her cards!

Hear a pro once say that you are never pot committed if you know that you are beat. Seems to make sense to me.
