Thread: Best way to play low pocket pair

Default Best way to play low pocket pair

On freerolls I see a lot of high stacked people just go allin with low pocket pair. They are just happy to pick the few 3 or 4 (or maybe a little more if someone raised before him) big blinds.
I don't get this tactic. I once saw a high stacker do this with 44: I raised 3 big blinds, some guy called, THEN he reraised allin (7-8 big blinds in pot). He goes allin (he has 100 Big blinds).

What do you think of this play and how would you play low pocket pair (in early stage of tournament, middle and late stage)

and btw: i had QQ (45 BB's) and called, he hit his set and it was byebye freeroll for me.

Man I tell you what, I hate getting dealt any pocket pair any more. Online poker it seems people will call with anything and 6 out of 10 times beat your pocket pair and it makes me sick.

    Default Low pockets

I find that if you just call the big blind and see what the flop produces you can go from there. I only call small raises preflop and hope to trip. If I dont trip, if none of the cards on the board are over cards then I make a move, or if the flop is scattered with low cards I'll move on the pot. Most people are calling because they have face cards or a face card and a rag. so try and trip those low pockets or they are just about useless.

    Default Medium pockets

I always lose with these, next time I'll fold them in early position.

    Default Ouch

Man I'm hurtin for you. When i lose that much in freeroll chips it stings. I can only imagine how that felt. Hard to fold 7's especially with no over cards through the turn. Maybe it's a good thing that guy wasn't sitting right across the table from you when he flipped over those eights. Knuckle sandwich time.

    Default Playing small pairs

It depends on your strategy. If you loose aggressive then your prob. playing some form of small ball. Then your going to play them like you would play 8 5 spades. You raise small to get action and then you determine what to do after the flop.

If you tight aggressive then it depends on what game or tournament your playing. Where your at in the game and the players your playing against. The default strategy i play with for small pairs is to get in the pot as cheap as possible. Your only going to hit trips on the flop, 1 out of every 7 tries. If you don't hit trips then steal the pot if you can but throw it away if you get action.

    Default the killer pair

I feel that small to medium pocket pairs are a position hand and not a hand you wont to put your tournament life on. If you are in early position u need to just limp in or min raise with these hands tring to control the pot to see if you can catch that third card. Others would disagree with this and say you want to isolate the other hands to give you the best percentage of winning the hand, but the only hand that is going to call you is a stronger hand if your a lucky person then hey, go for it and I hope im on the other side of your allin cause any top hand is favored over your small pair.
On the other hand in late position I would be throwing out a large bet trying to pick up those blinds and anties and if your called well at best your in a coin flip situation. But these small pocket pairs should be a easy lay down if its called to do so....
