As for the pause, anything below maybe a $10 buy-in, I do not pay it any mind. After that and depending on the size of the tourny and payout it then depends. I know sometimes my pause is purely to count how many outs I have and figure out implied odds (so I am drawing) OR I am putting an opponent on a hand and figuring out their outs and implied odds (I have a made hand).
For me I learned it is important to do both since I was guilty of pausing more often on a draw than on a made hand. Of course, once I realized this was a leak, I was able to use it to my advantage when a scare card hit the table.
I have also come to the conclusion, it is easier to make a huge bluff on the river online than in person. Why? There is no re-buy or walk of shame afterwards.
Finally, as for the check, call, big bet on river. Guessing it falls into one these general categories:
1) Had a made hand all along and nothing on board made them think it fell behind. If I have a made hand and someone is betting into me, why not let them keep firing for a while?
2) Have a drawing hand and either getting pot odds or gambling that the hit will rake in a large stack of chips. Big bet at end makes sense if they hit.
3) Just doesn't believe.
4) Think they have you beat.
5) Think they can scare you off a middle type hand.
