Thread: What Poker book to buy first?

Default What Poker book to buy first?

    Hi all.

Just looking for some advice on what poker book would be best to buy as your first one to read.

I have read some posts about this and it seems that the HOH series has got good reviews along with Phil Gordons Little Green and Blue books.

I am going on holidays in a few weeks and want to get 1 or 2 to read while travelling.

What I want to know is, where would you reccommend I begin.

I have some Full Tilt Academy points so I am probably going to get the 2 Phil Gordon books and Colin Moshmans SNG strategy one too.

The first poker book i got was Doyles SS
A good book but i found it hard going
I also have all 3 HOH NL tourney books
i found it easier to digest the ideas/plays in these books and have found them a great help especially Vol3 The workbook

I am looking to get his books on cash games before i go away in a couple of months
Hopefully they will help to improve my cash game which seems to be stagnating atm

I would recommend the Harrington books as a starting point as they give you situations which you might come up agaiainst and you get the chance to play the hand yourself before going through the hands and explaining what you should be doing and why

    Good luck
Its always better to celebrate the good days than brood over the bad days

    Excellent selection!!!
I've read over 50 poker books (easily) and the choices you've made here are the ones I would recommend.

You can also (usually) get books at your local library via 'inter-library book loan' (where I live you can pretty much get any book as long as copyright is more than 1yr. old). Personally I would go this route for the HOH books (1 & 2... I wouldn't bother with vol.3)
HOH is good reading but also a bit out-dated (I'd still recommend it though... it's a decent foundation to work from although I know you already have alot of experience).
BEST nlhe mtt books after reading the above are >> "Winning Poker Tournaments - One Hand At A Time' Vol.1 (& Vol.2.. < vol.2 is 'after the bubble bursts'... vol.1 is up to the bubble, 'trouble hands', over 200 HH's with authors describing their thinking process throughout (authors are Rizen, PearlJammer, Apestyles, & Matt Hilger.... aka Eric Lynch, Jon Turner & Jon Van Fleet). These two books are by far the best out there today (nothing else even comes close).

I've heard Shaw's SNG book is pretty good too (but haven't read it... might still buy it but only because I'm a poker book addict). Kill Everyone (Elky edition) is also supposed to be pretty good (although I've read mixed reviews about it... many saying it's excellent.. a few others (regs.) saying it's pretty basic.

Not meaning to knock PLAYFUL1 here on her choice ^... but I had heard some decent reviews about this book (on forums) so I picked it up (via library fortunately). I thought it was trash!! Super novice & very out-dated. I did manage to read the entire thing.... but man it was a real grind to get through it (it was just that baddddddd). I took absolutely nothing away from that book (aside from lettting others know to not get it).
Negreanu's books are short, simple & straightforward. Probably good for the novice nlhe player as he gives a bunch of good tips in them. His more recent book I only liked his section in it but I woudln't recommend buying it.

Thanks alot for the tips PO.

I'd have to trust the views of a poker book ADDICT lol.

I'm just thinking there's alot I'm missing out on by not reading some of these and hope it will bring my game to a higher level.

Now the next question: Anyone know a site to pick up poker books on the cheap?

The best one I've read on MTTs is by ....wait for it ...Phil Hellmuth...I know he's rubbish at cash but his advice on MTTs is outstanding.

You better have nerves of steel to use some of those hands in WINNING TOURNIES ONE HAND AT A TIME VOL 1 & 2, I have busted myself out trying a lot of that stuff, but of course I dont have the rep of PEarljammer. I had to back up to the FULL TILT Toruny Strategy guide and make sure I have a grip on that and then I will get back to WTOHAT VOl 1 and Vol 2 ( I bought both also and they are great) but if you get it, check out what one guy does with a 2 2 and the flop is all high cards. Its incredible stuff they are able to do but I dont think people playing in my buy in range are even thinking about folding with all these 3 1/2bb bets 2/3 stack bets and so on. BUT YES THOSE ARE TWO GREAT BOOKS, but way over my head so I backed up and making sure I understand what why they are even betting like they do. BUt if you can start pulling off hands like that, you will be badass. One great thing about VOL 1 and 2 they go into great detail why they are doing what they do and they even let you know when the risk didnt pay off and they lose the hand and how they were able to keep the losses at a minimum but keep in mind there idea as minimal loss would seem devastating to me LOL

Don't want to come off sounding like an azz.. BUT.. I've read every poker book that Helmuth has written (only because I'm an addict). Not one of them would even make it in the Top50 of the ones I've read.

'thejudge'... I think you'd REALLY enjoy some of the other books out there on Tournament play if you actually liked Phil's.
