Default I CALL, he CALLS she CALLS

"Its not what you raise with. Its what you CALL with, that defines you as a poker player"

"Real poker players don't CALL very often. Either they fold, or they raise."

So These two are far from saying the same thing

before "CALLing stations" were even mentioned...

    what is a call then

I don,t agree with this statement anyway.Whats wrong with a smooth call when your trapping an opponent. ?? Plus if your onj a draw a Call could save you alot of chips in tournament play. Often you RAise and scare everyone out of the pot. I think you have to mix it up though.

Mixing it up is good! You need to do that to avoid giving the other players too much information on what's in your hand. The trick is to play loser with a tight pl;ayer and tighter with a loose player. You always have to fear the bad player, because they will catch what they need and kill good players at the lower pot tables.

i agree 100% with this statement. raising any 2 cards is acceptable in my opinion if your a good post flop player. on the other hand you dont want to be calling raises unless you think you have the best hand or think you can outplay your opponent. i have read this quote before and would like to add another that goes along with it. "if a good player calls you he usually has a monster."

so calling in order to hit a draw is a bad move?

are you saying that pro's can't draw?

    Default both points useful imho

    hi

I'd say that both quotes are useful and maybe not totally contradictory

good thread to start jacks ;-)

to me the first quote is about saying that there ISNT anything wrong with calling providing your doing it for a reason and your not just calling any and all hands

so I'd agree with you of course pro's can draw (calling etc) - and do afiaks

the fold or raise thing is often quoted and is I think something that is rghtly given out as general advice for players to quickly fill a hole in their game ... ie. generally playing too many hands and being a total calling station

Personally I think there is alot to be said for smooth calling hands that you want to raise IF you know there will be a raise behind you ... also for smooth calling drawing hands that are multi way hands with good potential

at the same time I sometimes like to raise up a hand even if I'm on a draw because I figure the made hand I'm up against isnt going to be able to stand agression on the next street if some nasty cards on etc etc

the thing with quotes and one line advice is that as we all agree so much of poker "depends" that no one piece of advice will cover it all ;-)

and I guess thats why we all love the game - however frustrating it can be

    cheers scrawnybob

In my view, theses quotes ain't refering to same situation.
In the first statement, if you chose to call a raise with 64os, then we could clearly admitt that you could be define as a loose poker player. Nor if you call a raise with AKsuited you'd probably a tight one. But both are poker players.
In the second one, i feel like it's more about making a move and catch some infos about your opponent hand.
