My Olympic rant

My Olympic rant:

I am a squash player and CANNOT believe that squash is not an olympic sport, there was a campaign to include it in London 2012 but the committee rejected this in favour of some other activities that people try and pass off as sports.

Playing squash to a high level requires great skill and a level of fitness to rival the majority of top sports.

How can such activities as synchronised swimming, shooting, Beach Volleyball (OK maybe the womens should be allowed), BMX biking, trampoline, people jumping over sticks with horses, and archery be included when squash is not?

Any activity that involves a panel of judges deciding who wins is not a sport IMO.

There would only be a few metals (mens, womens, maybe 1 or 2 doubles) for squash.

Take swimming - there are 1,400 medals allocated to this sport. 10m, 20m, 50m, 100m, 400m, 455m..... etc etc - all with different strokes and then relay races and other stupid varations. e.g. No wonder M Phelps has won so many bloody golds - cos he is GOOD AT SWIMMING - its JUST 1 SPORT for heavens sake.

Im not even going to start with equestrian!!

i hear ya buddy - dont get me wrong. squash is a great sports imho (lol every activity that makes you sweat in 5 mins is sport

personally, the current war going on between russia and georgia inerests me more. and this situation is ridiculous!!!

not only because i'm russian but because this olympics is so "in the way" of it, or the war is in the way of the games- depends on who asks/answers.

in conclusion to your last sentence, chess then should be called a sport and be included in Olympics?

Furthermore Squash has a judge too as tenis does...

Well I would like to say that it is a shame that such an attitude exists in this day and age. To stop the olympics to discuss (yet another) war. I am from Northern Ireland (Ulster) and our country was bombed and torn apart by terrorists for 30 years. Not ONCE did anyone say that an event such as the Olympics was 'in the way' of this. No, any distraction was welcomed.

Personally I am sick and tired of one war after another, God forbid human beings actually achieve something for themselves and strive to be better than anyone else .Olympians are athletes and have become the best of the best - perhaps we should celebrate them more and give less airtime to terrorists - then perhaps we would stop fuelling the fires and the perpetrators of war would get bored and go home.

Poker should be an Olympic sport and the sweet thing is that it would be a part of the summer and winter games. Imagine Phil Hellmuth and everyone going for the gold medal of poker!

I like chess but any activity that involves sitting still for 6 hours is not a sport.

Squash has markers, tennis has an umpire, just like soccer has a ref, they are not 'judges' and have very little influence on the outcome of the game.


Maybe at London 2012 we could have competitors playing playstation or nintendo Wii for a Gold medal!!!!

I have sympathy with the people of Georgia but a poker forum is not the place for discussing such issues.

Poker will never be an olympic sport. If the US congress cant decide on it then how will the IOC and with all the contreversy surrounding the legality of poker, and the fact that not all countries allow it will mean that it wont happen.

On the same note that natural bodybuilding was put forawrd as olympic sport but was thrown out as well. There are some olympic sports that should not be in there. i.e. football, and some that should be like you said squash should be in there for sure.

They even wanted to put ballroom dancing in as an olympic sport whats the deal with that!

Oh heck ya! I was born of the video game age and am ready to go for the gold!! What types of events are we taking about? Pac-Man style? Bieayaaahhhhh!!
