    Default Starting BankRoll

Dear fellow poker players, I have a question. I have finally gotten my money together to play poker. $1,000.00
I figured I should take $200 for ring game stake at $1-$2 NL casino
I figured I should take $300 for ring game stake at $.50-$1 NL on-line
    ********
I figured I should take $200 for Tournaments game stake at $30-$50 Buy ins casino
    I figured I should take $300 for Sit N Go's game stake at $10-$20, and low tourneys under $5 nuy in's on-line
I just started playing this year and this will give me a chance to play them all and see how I do and which game I am good at. I have played all of them before still don't know which one I like the most, however, got my ass served to me in Sit N Go's.
Ring games I like because it lets you play Texas Hold Em, Tourneys you are a coin toss half the time, blinds go up so fast. I need to learn how to play table games LIVE face to face, because i think the Gov. is going to fuck up on-line poker so many rooms have kicked USA (Missouri) off now.

    Default bankroll management

    hi candylicker

hate to say this but I think you will be seriously underfunded if your playing those limits

your playing $1/2 with $200 - thats the max buyin for one cash game

if this is the bankroll you have built up to last you - then you need to have at least 10x the max buy-in for whatever stake you playing and really 20x if this is a one off career starter you are building

so if your playing $1/2 where the max buy-in is $200 per game then you need a bankroll of $2000 min just for this part of your project

Putting all the other elements into your plan makes this all the more complicated but - as far as I can see at any one time you are most likely (to be able to play effectively at these limits) to be putting more than 1/5th of your roll on the table in a single game

You've been with us a while and so I hope I can say this as I don't want anyone starting off wrong - I seriously think if this has taken you time to save up then -

don't blow it on a big bad plan - get a smaller plan to fit your budget

Playing in a casino with what is effective one buy-in is sure to cripple you - you won't play well because your only giving yourself one shot at it - this is a sure way to end up sitting tight and getting raked / blinded away

if you have $1000 then play cash games (if that is a decent side of your game) ONLINE - you will pay less in rake to sit at home and see 2x the hands for less than in a casino

sit down at a NL game where the max buy-in is no more than $100 (10th of roll)
think that will be about $0.25/0.50 and build it

you can make quick money at higher limits than your bankroll should allow - but trust me you will hit a bad streak and when its most or all of you money at one table it hurts

if that money took you along time to earn - dont risk it all at once

    cheers scrawnybob

    Wink

I never, ever, ever seem to have any luck at ring games. All the money I make in tournaments seems to vanish within a short time at the "live" tables. I think its something that I will definitely have to work on to be good at poker. I f I was playing 1 and 2 dollar blinds Id pass out...lol

all poker players should try to learn to be good at cash games because that is where the most money can be made in the long run.

yeah big pay-offs can be made through tournies but if you are good at cash games then you can make good money consistently!!

    Default hey

hey i like to buy in with the minimum everytime. that way the big stacks call you when yo u have killer hands, and then when you do doulbe or triple, u dont lose as much as once, or blow ur bankroll on 1 bad beat.

With a smaller bank roll of say just $200, do you think it is better to play in very low limit ring games, or 6 seater sit and go's? or maybe even 10 seater ones. At the moment I am playing in $5, 6 seater sit and go's. Made the money in a 1/3rd of them, but it does not add up too much!!
