you can only raise the river if a scare card comes out, say you put him on 9's, well if a 4 comes out he will call it but if a Q hits take a stab

    Default bets on the river

    hi

I'd say 8/10 if your facing a bet on the river - It isn't a bluff

ok so we all have a shot at a bluff now and again but mostly bets on the river are in one way or another a value bet to extract additional cash for a strong / winning hand

I would always give river bets a bit more consideration - far to many players think they are trying to steal - if its a pretty basic low level game - they have a hand and are just trying to figure if they can win more

sure if you have a better hand and trapped them / they bluff alot then fine - but I'd be wary about a re-raise

if they call your probably beat

if they raise then you've just wasted bets and almost definately beat

if they fold then you've not gained over calling (if you had better hand)

really you need to have forced the action on the flop & turn and mop up on the river

also you need to consider if they have hit something lucky on the river which has made them bet again

scare cards - I like these at any point in the hand - Play them when you feel confident that your ahead and they will feel behind -

ie. when you can represent scare cards confidently / convincingly or when they have helped you more than they have helped the other players
